Necro here:

I booked a last minute cheap trip to Ft Lauderdale. I think our hotel is technically in Hollywood and looks like it's crappy, but like I said we got it dirt cheap and we're just going to spend some time in the sun together without any worries about fancy times.

So, that said, any good suggestions for a couple to have a good time without going insane on spending? I've only been to Ft Lauderdale once as a one-night stopover before getting on a cruise and I remember gallery at beach place was ok. Think I got tanked at Fat Tuesdays.

How many days will you be in FTL? What do you two like to do? There are a fair amount of options. Just depends on what you are into.

Pretty much open to anything that'll be stress free and preferably outdoors. Any "must eat at" suggestions would be great. Is joes stone crab far from there? We'll be there Thursday around noon until Sunday morning.

There wasn't much in particular we did in FLL, just hit the beach, walked down to this mall complex with a restaurant for food and drink; didn't have much time to really know any must-visit places. When are you going? A few buddies of mine got SoBe booked for early June

I'll be there the 3rd week of May. What about this place? http://www.lasolasboulevard.com/ I found it just by googling "things to do in ft lauderdale."

Yes, go to Las Olas. You can head north on A1A, then turn west onto Las Olas. Las Olas and A1A is probably the more crowded beach area of Fort Lauderdale if you are into that. There are a few good restaurants and the crowd has improved slightly over the last year. It was getting a bit empty, but some stores are returning. You can spend an evening there eating and drinking - then head a little more west (just past Riverwalk) if you want a more rowdy (maybe douchey) crowd. You'll probably one to spend one of the nights around Miami (South Beach) as well. Hit up Lincoln Rd. for some great people watching and some interesting sights. Head down Collins for some alright shopping and Ocean dr. for cheesy bars and expensive drinks.

These are great suggestions. If you are going to be in FTL, the beach, and Las Olas are the biggest places to hit. MoMa:Fort Lauderdale and the Science Museum with an IMAX theater are near/on Las Olas. You can pick up the water taxi for something "touristy" near riverwalk. Drinks at riverwalk can be had at Art Bar, Briny's, etc. If you head further east, there's plenty of restaurants like Mangos, Yolo, Morton's Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory, etc.

Also, I don't know if you hang out in SWD or MC, but Maus & Hoffman is located on Las Olas. They are members here and super nice too.

Whatever you do, do not go out in downtown fort lauderdale. It's a complete shit hole and the crowd is 90% trash. Las Olas and the beach bars are much better, although I think west palm and miami are infinitely better than fort laud.

Technically, downtown Fort Lauderdale IS Las Olas ... if you want to separate them, then there is only a single block dividing the areas and that houses the Museum and a BCC building. While I agree that much of the downtown crowd (i.e. Himmarshee) is a bit douchey, I'd just as quick label most of the Las Olas crowd a bunch of red-necks with over the hill mangled trophy wives. The beach bars are mostly burned canadian tourists and fat midwestern tourists. It's been awhile since I've been to West Palm - and while the crowd might be upper scale - it wasn't anything exciting (or even remotely young).

I'd agree with that. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of other options. Steak954 at the W Hotel is good. Truluck at the Galleria is good if you want some seafood. The rest is douchey tourists and rude locals.

We should have a SF/SFL meetup sometime
