Moving to California - prudent or am I a few posts short of a squirrelled thread?

Well, I thought that this would be a good place to get some opinions as there is a large contingent of peeps in CA. So, Short of it is I'll need to get a new job soon, and naturally I have seen a considerable number of positions in the tech industry in California, most around the Bay area, San Francisco, San Jose et.c. as well as some further south.

My primary concern is the cost of living. I know it is a rather substantial increase of costs compared to here, but with a decent salary I should be ok. But what happens if/when the next wave of downsizing hits me?

Tucson is far from a mecca for software/It in general, especially if you cannot work for a firm requiring citizenship & clearance so in a way I am hedging my bets that lower cost of living + pay cut would be worse than high risk move + higher cost of living.

Am I off my rocker? Not even sure what I am asking at this point, quite frankly. I think I am stressing out too much over all this rubbish.

bro, I moved to LA 5 years with 2 grand in my pocket and no job. Worked at circuit shitty for a month and lived with 2 roommates on an air matress, outta boxes and eating spaghetti o's til I got a real job. That job pulled in 32k a year and I was balling. As long as I had cash to pay my rent ($900/mo.) and get some PBR it was all good. Fortuantely I didnt have ANY debt - no loans, car paid off, etc...

You can do it if your not a total fuckwad. But it depends on your situation... if you screwed yourself over financially in the past (new cars, expensive debts, etc...) then you reap what you sow.

With that said, stay out of california. We dont need anymore cars here.

The downsizing has already happened. Many companies are hiring like mad right now in the Bay Area. Salesforce.com in particular - don't worry about it.

If you are planning to rent a place then the cost difference won't be too much. Its owning a house that is really expensive in the bay area.

It's a weird place. And prepare for the commutes. It once took me 3 hours to drive from San Fransisco to San Jose (around 50 miles).

Are you solo, or relocating a wife, kids too?

I've got a room open in my flat at 750 a month in Rockridge, Oakland (22 minutes from downtown SF by BART).

No house purchase here, don't expect I will stay there all my life, anyway...

No wife, no kids. A small parrot and maybe a girlfriend at most.

Heh. Ad duly noted.

You'll shit your pants when you see the rents, especially if you do some sort of rent vs. value. vs. commute analysis. But, if you have a decent-paying job you'll be able to afford it. And unless you live close to where you work, expect minimum 1 hour commute each way.

Yeah, I noticed that the rents are double the amount. Yech.
