Dinner at La Grenouille

Has anybody been there recently? It has been a long time for me and am wondering if everything is still the same?

In early December, my wife and I are going up for the day. Normally we stay overnight but not this time. Think we can have dinner and make a 9:05pm flight out of La Guardia? We plan to have lunch at Le Bernardin (her favorite restaurant).

Also-- what is the difference between classic French and new French?

A few years ago. Still, one of the greatest meals I've eaten. Superb.

I went in 2006 or 7. Seemed very tired to me, to be honest. Not that impressed. I had not been since the late '90s. I remember it fondly from the first few times I went in the late '80s and early '90s, but it seems to be well past its prime.

Another anecdote, for what it's worth: I went last year and it was certainly far more quiet than the time I'd been previously but whether that's the fault of the restaurant or the fault of the economy I do not know. Either way I liked the quiet. I thought the food was still exceptional and the place still a bit pretentious.

Ahhh, but had you just eaten lunch at Le Bernardin?

This thread needs another Vox v. gdl Le Bernardin pissing contest. It's been a while.

I want one month ago and had a very good meal but I couldn't go there more than once a year. It is very formal and old fashioned french. I thought the food was very good and it is a unique place but it is a bit overpriced.

Nothing else like it here, I had quenelles and frogs legs two things on about no menus in NYC.

Can anybody comment on new French vs. classic French cuisine?

Guess I missed that one. I do remember Vox not liking Le Bernardin for some reason.

As it would require an early dinner to accommodate your flight, I can't see how two major meals back to back would be enjoyable. I say just shoot the moon at Le Bernardin and get an extra course and an especially fine wine versus gorging yourself and having a bloated stomach for your flight.

From what I remember, it would be a little difficult to gorge oneself at Grenouille.
