Double leather sole versus single

I recall Nick V. posting a few months ago that the double leather sole doesn't improve the longevity of the sole though, as the inner sole is non-functional and not designed to contact the pavement. That ruined my idea of getting double soles so I don't wear through the sole so quickly.

I tried a new shoe cobbler last week who used to be an Allen Edmonds rep. He was heavily discounting his stock to move them. He had a pair of AE Waltons that were doubled soled in my size. I tried them on and they felt heavy. Thye also felt hard compared to the other AE he had in my size. He said they were normally $350 from AE becuase of the double sole. I passed.

I love my double stacked Alden shells (black captoe blucher).
They're built like tanks, and the sole is a big part of that
A bit heavier of course, but if you really notice that kind of a difference, it's time to hit the gym!

I actually like the double leather sole enough that I order MTO for shoes that traditionally come with the single leather sole. For those of my shoes only having the single leather sole, when it is time to have them resoled, I will have doubles put on them. I don't mind the extra weight.
