Going to Hong Kong soon, need advice...

Had a search for this, didn't turn up quite what I wanted.

I'm going to Hong Kong on Thursday, and having grown up in rural England I don't really know how to dress for humidity. This is my main concern, as I don't want to be traipsing around all day feeling rubbish because I made a dumb clothing decision.

Moreover, is there anything (non-fashion related, but hey, fashion is fine too.) that I absolutely have to do whilst I'm there and anything I should avoid?

Congratulations. If I were going, I'd bring some good quality cloth and get a couple of suits made. I'd do this only if I had a local to negotiate for me. From my understanding there is a tailor on every block capable of doing a bespoke suit, but they vary widely in ability.

I wouldn't be worried about the late October weather in Hong Kong. It's 27 degrees, nothing to fret over.

Monday: Mostly cloudy, breezy and humid with a couple of showers. Winds from the E at 25 km/h.

I'd recommend just walking the length of nathan road for an interesting experience, if you have the time. Getting a suit tailored (as above) is also good advice - it's something I regret not having done when I visited. In terms of dress, when I was there I found light(ish) weight long-sleeve shirts very useful. In the evening if there's a bit of a breeze, you can wear them with the sleeves down if you feel the need but, for most of the day when it is quite warm, you can have the sleeves rolled-up. Obvious idea I guess, but a good one I think. Maybe take one light jacket, but I doubt you'll really need it.

The challenge in dressing for H.K. is not really the heat and humidity. The most difficult part is dressing for extreme heat/humidity outside, while dressing for extreme cold conditions indoors . In H.K. they set the air conditioning at very low temperature, so you will be freezing if you dress too lightly. Even if it`s like summer temperature outside, some of the ladies are wearing fur inside.

HK is not that humid at all. It's actually quite pleasant at the moment. Was there a week ago. I did most of my business on that trip in khakis and an open neck shirt. Minimal science involved in that particular get-up. As for tailors - there are a zillion and four HK tailor threads available here pointing you to guys that won't rip you off and that will do a fine job, and won't require you bringing your own cloth with you. Just avoid all the Indian tailor-touts harassing you in TST and you will be fine.

Thanks guys . I'm pretty excited to eat a bunch of awesome food.

disappointment awaits. As much as I love HK, I can't think of anywhere in Asia where the food is worse.

aw, c'mon, Matt. HKG is not bad at all- and there's a long line of Asian cities where food sucks more than a Mongkok hooker.

If you are referring to Western food, I completely agree with you, but there are some pretty good eats for Chinese food.

Oh my, what did you eat while you were here?

i dated a HK girl for two years. She took me everywhere....'this place is so well known for ___' - 'this place is so famous for its ____' - I've been everywhere. Plastic stools in Mongkok gutters to fine dining places with harbor views. Fish markets on islands. Private dining rooms where menu is dictated by today's produce. It's all bad. Oily, bland crap. Even last week, I was dragged along for wonton at some place that is 'the best wonton on the island, ask anyone' (no idea where I was - a bit west of central somewhere). No taste whatsover. Remove taste, add oil. Yeeccch. There is but one exception to this rule - curry fishballs. Those rock. Otherwise, as much as I love the place, it is one of very few cities where I regard McDonalds as one of the better dining options.
