Can you commute by boat to Manhattan?

Can you commute via boat to Manhattan? For instance, it looks like the NYSE is maybe 6 or 7 blocks from the water. And Manhattan (at least at one time) was ringed with docks and was a major port area. So can you commute onto the island via boat?

And I don't mean one of these:

I mean one of these:

Can you go down to the marina or the shore of NJ and make your drive into work via water, instead of on land?

I remember when I was young one of my fathers colleagues telling me he sailed to work (as a banker of some kind) with his suit etc. stored on board. We lived in NY at the time so it may well have been to Manhattan, I don't know though. For all I know he could have lived anywhere in the states. It struck me at the time as about the coolest thing possible, but I was about six.

Huntington Hartford III did.

Famously, he decided that he wanted to be a reporter (a job he secured by giving the struggling magazine PM a $100k loan).
Returning from his first assignment on Long Island, he couldn't dock his yacht and missed his deadline, ending his career.

My boss takes a high speed launch to the golf course a couple times a week during the summer.

There are docks close to the World Financial Center, so conceivably it is possible.

There was an entire category of yacht developed in the 1920s for this-- the "commuter launch."

Since 9/11 boat traffic in lower Manhattan is significantly more restricted. So to the extent thats its possible, its difficult.

Well, if a person has the means to travel to the island by boat, I'm sure they could find a way to make this happen.
