Led Zeppelin - Song Stealers?

Of course, how much Rock and Roll is original. But this is pretty obvious. At least they could have given the original artists credit.

There were several instances of them "borrowing" songs, lots of old blues stuff, and some even from their own lesser known opening acts that never made it big. In the newer releases of their CDs, they've given credit to these other artists in the liner notes.

welcome to 1979.

Led Zep has always been very gracious of their sources. It's like putting in a line in a rap song "billie jean is not my son" and having to explain it's source. Really? Yes some people are dumb enough to require explanation.

Sure some of the exploitation of blues was pretty unseamly, but finding similarities / nicked things in music has always been one of my favorite parts of music. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bYck2B_0-DI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bYck2B_0-DI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NlQhgdVsuI4&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NlQhgdVsuI4&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

What's the Pablo Picasso quote? Good artists borrow, great artists steal?

Are you joking?

I'd like to offer a point from a diehard and lifelong Zep fan. Yes, they did steal a lot. I used to have a compllation cassette of the original versions of songs Zep ripped off, more or less, that was back in the early nineties. And there were a plenty of songs on that cassette. However, I bet that no matter what they stole, once you hear Zep grooving, you instantly recognize it's them. So they stole but they also made it their own. Zep may seem simple at first listen but I am yet to hear any other band who could reproduce (I don't mean simply mimic) their sound, while they inspired and still continue to inspire a ton of people. You just don't hear a nice cover of Rock and Roll, if you get my point.

Let me put it a different way. It's better to steal good music to make good music, than steal shitty music and make shittier music.

For an illustration of the latter, see Coldplay.

Does song from 1967 sound familar?

Zeppelin never credited Jake Holmes, and if they had, his career would have likely taken a different trajectory. Jake Holmes later went into jingle writing, penning such classics as "Be All That You Can Be In The Army" and "Zack The Legomaniac".

His (rare, extremely valued by collectors) psychedelic albums from the 60s are available for download. Especially check out "Leaves never break":

Oh yeah, and he used to be in a musical comedy act with Joan Rivers.

I feel bad that I find When I Ruled the World kinda catchy but otherwise +1. At lest Zep stole from talent.

You can't reinvent the wheel, only refine the classics.

Coldplay supposedly stole the vocal melody line from a guitar melody from a song by Joe Satriani. You say "talent" like Joe Satriani doesn't have any.

I'm honestly not a fan as I tried to stray away from shredder crowd after a while (i play guitar) but Satriani is technically a rather skilled guitarist. Whether or not his music is worth listening to is another story, but he could probably shame most people on guitar. Not to the degree someone like Steve Vai or John Mclaughlin could, but still.

and as for Led Zeppelin stealing, I'm probably in the minority that thinks they're no big deal; sure they have written some great songs, but so have a lot of bands. They might have been the shit in 1974, but there is too much good music to be stuck thinking the best shit came out in the late 1960's and 1970's and was created by the beatles and led zeppelin.
