Alligator / Crocodile Shoes - Page 55

Agreed about the OTT factor, but still cool to ponder.

And yes, you can "suede" gator. It's the underside of the hide, so making it is similar to the process of making reverse-calf suede. However, with gator and croc (AFAIK) you can't split the hide, so you're not going to find a price break like you would with a layered split-suede calf. From what I understand the tanning process is similar to Nubuck.

Personally I think gator interior is a bit (a bit?!) over-the-top. However, were I in a position to put alligator or croc in a Ferrari, I'd only do the seat inserts (the stitched seat and lumbar support in the picture) and keep the regular leather on the edges. Just my $0.02.

Very very cool....

I don't think so. You may have seen something I have not but all the sueded croc or gator I've seen is actually grainside buffed. Like nubuck. Not the fleshside at all.

I'll defer to you on this, DWF. I can't remember where it was but read somewhere about tanning the fleshside (and the parallel to the reverse calf). However, I also have read about grainside buffing and that, frankly, makes more sense. Re-reading my post I think I was talking out of both sides of my mouth... typical.

I was brought there because I was contemplating getting one for a vintage watch I own.

No biggie...I'm just always optimistic that people who are interested in shoes / leather will usually also be interested in details like that.

Should I just change the title of the thread to the Exotic Leathers thread?

So if I want to order Bonafe - do they work direct? I tried emailing through their form and didn't get a response.

Don't think they sell directly to customers.
