thanks DW, where would makers normally use the tails?

and those shoes, are they still worth more than calf? in terms of material?

From my info they use those part for small thing like strap for jodhpur or small strap in loafer etc.

If so, not much, IMO. I, personally, wouldn't use much of the tail for anything except perhaps a matching belt. And that as much because of the length of the strip I could cut from the tail.

That said, there is some nice leather on the tail right around the vent but it is probably less than 10 square inches in total.

Always providing more info, DWFII!

took a photo of the vamp, is that the part close to the vent?

Also can see the bony tiles on the sides of the shoe....

At the top of the tongue is getting close to the vent. The toe of the shoe is further away.

edited for punctuation and clarity

Speaking of cracking between tiles, is there anything that can be done to repair that cracking/separating? I have a pair that are cracking at the outside of each foot (close to the pinky toe). It isn't readily noticeable when they are being worn, but I would like to repair them if possible. Any suggestions?

Once any leather begins to crack there is noting that can be done to "repair" the damage. Patch, yes. Darn, yes. But repair no.

That was my fear. I guess I'll just bring them to a cobbler and see what he can do...
