IMO...that's the case with any leather, any shoe.
Any element...whether it be a toe cap, a double sole, or a complicated macrame welt stitch...that breaks the lines of the shoe, or distracts the eye from the leather itself--anything that screams "Look at me!"--offsets elegance. One of the fundamental aspects of elegance is simplicity...even modesty.
