Thinking about a possibility of a major career change...

Never really thought I'd say this, but I might be regretting moving more towards finance/investments from the creative side of business as I originally intended. I actually enjoy finance and all that, but I am just not crazy passionate about it. I mean I never dreaded waking up in the morning and going to work, but..

On the other hand, I've always been pretty artistic and into design/new product development/entrepreneurship. Always had a good eye for color/shape/space. I honestly think I'd make a great industrial/product designer, and would be much more valuable in that capacity even in the corporate world. In finance I am one of many, and not by any means the smartest dude. In creative/design/even retail/fashion field I can see myself being much more competitive and successful at the higher level.

I also used to think that I could apply myself creatively as an entrepreneur in a traditional sense, but I realized that I liked the idea/creation part much more than the daily grind of sales/operations/etc.

Makes me want to just stop what I'm doing, enroll into design/arts/whatever program and just go for it. Kind of like the whole kwilk thing - I think I'd be happy doing this shit for free and much more into my work.

Says it all right there.

The problem is that there is fear that I won't succeed at it, even though my gut feel tells me that I would.

And then you have people like Kunk saying that the creative side is shit as well.

Yep, it can be shit no matter what field you're into - even if it's something that inspires you.

Nothing wrong with testing the waters in your free time though.

My experience -No matter how much you think you like it, when it becomes a job it brings on the same sort of issues.

Oh I know that. That part is a bit scary too.

If you have enough in savings to ride out any tough times and you are motivated, why not?

How's the bank? If the bank is good, pretty sure and steady, coupled with the bolded, STFU and earn your money. Enjoy your off time. Work is a four letter word for a reason.

Industrial design is my intended career path as well. Just realize you probably will not make as much money as a financial job, and the first few years are probably going to really suck..

these threads pop up weekly...we should consolidate

You'd be a much more interesting person if you went for it.

How deep into your career are you? I mean, Christ, if you're in your 20s, go for it... but if you're mid-30s and expecting to get dropped in a couple paygrades up from bottom, I think that would be tough.

see this current economy? at my university career expo you know how many businesses were recruiting for marketing/creative/fun positions? zilch. they were all looking for accounting, finance, supply chain, operations, EE/CS/MIS look, unless you're about to slit your wrist the next time you're asked about EBITDA and cash flows...just deal.

Sort of. I have a cushion, but nothing that would cover complete costs of tuition and living.

Current career has been derailed pretty badly. Not quite DOA, but close. Without a major catalyst it will be pretty hard to recover until the economy picks up.

I wouldn't be sacrificing my life's work, lets just put it this way. Also single, no kids, tiny mortgage, etc.

Believe me, I understand all that very well, perhaps too well, in such a way that it has been preventing me from really considering certain options.

To make it more complicated, I've also been offered to transition into the operations side of things (in a good way).

Not to suggest something weird but is there a way to sorta mix the two? In other words to leverage your quant/financial skills and entrepreneurial spirit in the creative field of your choice. That way you'd be piling on instead of merely bifurcating. You seem like a pretty competitive fellow so I assume you like the finance aspect. Be warned that people in creative fields are generally meaner than Hitler and will fight you just because they didn't like their coffee.
