What are the best out there? I'm itching for some page-turners, and I like the way the Brits do mystery. The only one I can think of is Martha Grimes. I've read all of Agatha Christie's stuff so don't bother mentioning her.

Just watch Gosford Park once or twice and that should satisfy your appetite.

I liked the one where Sherlock Holmes went up against the Mormons.

What was it called, shit...oh yeah...Sherlock Holmes!

I've seen it more than twice.

Check out Boris Akunin. He writes in a similar style, and from appx the same period. AND he's good.

The DVD commentary with Robert Altman is great if you're interested. Lots of fascinating anecdotes about production.

Sayers, perhaps, if you want to go back in time, or perhaps P.D. James. I thought the adaptation of his The Murder Room was pretty good so I'm sure the book will be great. ~ H

Thanks for that recommendation. I recognize some of the titles because they were made into ITV mini-movies.

You've read all of Christie's stuff?

There is also Dorothy L Sayers's Peter Wimsey mysteries.

I quite like Jaqueline Winspear's (sp?) Massie Dobbs stories.

I assume you've read Holmes.

And I'll throw in a non-Brit: Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason stories. The only one I've read was nothing like the tv show. Mason was much darker than in the show.

Well, not all. Most I guess. Went on a big Christie kick when I was in middle and high school.

If you're not looking for pure detective fiction, John Buchan and Daphne du Maurier may be worth a look.
