Scorsese: Shutter Island - Page 4

You have a better chance of enjoying this movie if you avoid any media on it. My friends (who saw a bunch of trailers, read reviews) hated it bc they "figured it out." My brother and I ignored most of the hype and loved the movie. Shot well, manages to create dread without cheesing out. Solid performances from the supporters (Williams, Ruffalo, Kingsley, von Sydow), but I always struggle to take DiCaprio seriously. He was all right. Spoiler: That ending was absurd in retrospect--Kingsley was one step away from showing PowerPoint slides. Conclusion length wasn't bad, as I had a chance to think about some scenes (interrupting trustees' meeting, conversation with warden, reluctance of staff to convey information). Worth the $10, but you don't have to watch this in theaters (as opposed to, say, Hurt Locker).

Waste of time and money, my wife and I thought. Utterly implausible, fantastical plot, and De Caprio is perhaps a worse ham than Mel Gibson, and that's saying a lot!

Like others, I liked the suits.

walked in with no knowledge or expectations... overally pretty dissapointed. I feel like I've seen this sort of thing before. Very "Total Recal"ish meets Sixth Sense Pretty good camera work, there were a few dizzying quick pans back and forth between characters and buildings that make me close my eyes and breathe also the overly omonous music was noticeably annoying IMO. As much as I like DiCaprio, I still feel like he's always overacting, trying to make everything seem like SUCH a big deal and he always looks like he's one second away from bursting into tears. *** Spoiler Alert: About the ending, I agree, it was all too neatly wrapped up. I mean didn't Kingsley explain early on that you can't just "explain" logically to someone something if they're out of touch with reality? and then proceed to try and do just that?

I was wanting to see that movie for the longest time, I am not going to give anything away. but it reminded me of "secret window". I was pretty disappointed .

Uh, I knew what the ending was after reading p.1 of this thread. However, I think the movie did a good job of looking at things through DiCaprio's character's eyes because I kind of got caught up in the story. I knew things were weird, I just wasn't sure what was weird and what was real.

I thought the ending was pretty cool and I had a couple of "oh, so that's why X person did/said Y at the beginning" moments.

Overall, not the best movie ever, but a fun suspense/thriller to watch

I liked it quite a bit. I didn't know anything about the story and didn't figure out the ending. I want to see it again when it goes into the dollar theater.

I was looking forward to see it...but having read the thread got crapped out...will wait until it comes out on DVD

I agree, go in to the theatre without very little knowledge of the movie or you will figure it out in no time. Scorsese really wavered off of his uual course with this movie. Great cinematography and I thought the cast was pretty fitting.

Saw the movie the other night. About 25 minutes into the movie I guessed the ending and after that it just dragged, and dragged, and dragged, and dragged, and dragged....

Finally saw this and it sucked, especially the end. I would consider this as one of the very worst Scorsese

It was pretty terrible. On the bright side, threads like this help to separate those whose artistic opinions we can take seriously from those whose we can't.

Rented it and thought it was a good movie. Recommend it to anyone wanting to see something fairly entertaining. Nice twist at end.
