During a meeting this morning, my mind wandered and I surveyed the conference room to see what people were wearing. No pocket squares, no french cuffs, a smattering of tie clasps and relatively few garments of sartorial merit and or cut. By far the footwear selections were the most disconcerting. Few jackets were correctly sized and fewer yet had put together an ensemble that one could regard as pleasing irrespective of quality. I just don't understand why people think that one shoe will take them from the sidewalk to the office to the hiking trail. Here are more details:

Provost - 2-button suit, solid navy, Hugo Boss level; lavender shirt; lavender, pink & blue tie; & rubber-soled black bluchers.

AVP Finance - plaid jacket & knee-length skirt (red, black & grey); fuchsia silk collarless top; & black calf boots.

VP finance - 2-button, solid medium grey department store suit, (Hudson's Bay Company logo inside); white shirt; silver base-colour tie with darker, silver & black circles or "bubbles"; & black rubber-soled oxfords.

Associate Dean Science - Navy 2-button blazer, silver metal buttons; blue butcher stripe shirt; no tie; blue jeans; & black Geox-type shoes.

Dean, School of Business - 3-button (no roll) black suit; black shirt; black tie with silver dots; & rubber-soled black bluchers.

Associate Dean Humanities - 3-button (no roll) black suit; white shirt; grey tie with black diamonds; black Kenneth Cole-esque ankle boots.

Associate Dean Agriculture & Bioresources - 3-button black suit (no roll); white shirt; solid black tie; black rubber soled Geox-like shoes.

Associate Dean, Social Sciences - hard to explain but some kind of 3-button, short, hip length, blue plaid, rough wool, odd jacket with massive shoulder (something a lumberjack might wear to church, a wedding or a funeral); blue striped shirt; blue jeans; & rubber-soled band-aid coloured loafers.

Associate Dean, Library - 3-button medium grey suit, department store level; white shirt; silver & blue diagonal striped tie; & black rubber-soled bluchers.

Associate Vice-President, Student Learning - 2-button solid navy suit; light blue shirt; blue with red repp tie; black Allen-Edmonds Park Avenues.

Dean, Afiliated Religious College - mid-brown, 2-button odd jacket; tan shirt; brown & orange striped tie; brown twill pants; & brown Geox-like shoes.

Dean, Graduate Studies - 3-button (no roll) tan seersucker odd jacket; black crew neck sweater; black slacks; & black rubber-soled bluchers.

Dean, Education - charcoal tweed jacket & matching knee length skirt with yellow collared silk shirt & black flats.

Director, Public Health - Oxxford charcoal grey with faint pinstripe 3-button suit, blue striped shirt, red & blue bow tie & black geox-like shoes plus a ball hat.

Dean, Law - Samuelsohn Charcoal grey pin-striped 2-button suit; white shirt; red & blue paisley tie, Allen-Edmonds Park Avenues.

Dean, Arts & Sciences - Prince of Wales' plaid jacket & matching skirt, red collared silk top, black flats.

Dean, Pharmacy - Sheppard's check 3-button (no roll) odd jacket; blue, white & pinked striped shirt; navy white & orange striped tie, black slacks & Geox-like black shoes.

AVP, Student Services - 2-button Navy blazer with silver buttons; pink & blue striped shirt; navy with pink checked tie; medium grey slacks, black Geox-like shoes.

Director, Facilities - Medium grey 3/2 roll pin-striped suit, light grey graph-check shirt, multi-coloured diamond pattern tie & chili-coloured oxfords.

Alas, all is not well in academe.

I assume you're either the dean of law or had the opportunity to see the inside of his clothes

No, I'm not the Dean of Law, but we have had conversations about where he buys his suits.

Did you actually take down those notes during the meeting? Were you obliged to peek under the table at their shoes mid session?

Well, one has to get up for coffee and network breaks so I figured I'd do a little research.

I expect better. I was unaware that there was the general perception that the entire country was viewed as shabbily dressed. I am shocked and crushed. While we did give the world "hockey hair" but we cannot take credit for Zubaz pants.
