Privacy policy/process

Anyone experienced with privacy around here? I have volunteered to draft a privacy policy/process at work. This will be for retail clients. When they contact us and wish to check confidential information or change contact details, we need to confirm their identity.

Obviously when they call in this is easy to do. I would check this information on every call.

When we call out to them, should we check?

Likewise, if they send an email requesting this type of information or a change, do we go back to them first and ask them to confirm their identity?

Even better would be a sample I can refer to.

Are you asking for legal advice? 'Cause it sounds like you are.

No. Just best practices. This won't ever cross a lawyer's desk. Compliance at the most.
