Unattractive black-tie. - Page 2

Note how poorly Ford's DJ fits at the collar; it's pulled well back from the shirt. One would expect impeccable fit from someone like him.

Browne is simply self-parody.

Lapo Elkann at that same party...

He's gone beyond Agnelli's wardrobe there.

The only thing wrong that I see with Ford's outfit is that his collar is pulling away. Perfect amount of cuff showing, very elegant. I doubt his pants are flared - they appear to be slightly on the wider side, but overall, the lines are pleasant looking. I own a DB Kiton suit with similar trousers, I like them very much. The thing with wide trousers is that they necessarily have to be cut with a full break. Otherwise, they'll flap around way too much when walking. I can't see much of the shoes, besides that they're square-toed. Again, as a genearl rule, wide trousers favor more squared shoes. Notwithstanding, they're not to my taste. I would have chose something a little more...I dunno, formal.

was this a black tie event or a costume ball?

Actually a little bit of both. The Tom Ford and Elkann pics were taken at the Costume Institute party of the year. Some of the outfits were rather humorous (although I personally doubt any of the above were meant to be...) - this one was definitely not serious:

The TB pic was taken at a different party though...

Don't be so sure, Hamish is an outlandish, edgy dresser, although he always pulls it off. Would love to know what he thinks of TB, as he is right in TB's target market.

I'd wager that the DJ Lapo is sporting was once worn by Agnelli.

I don't really like Ford's outfit because of the pants, shoes and DB.
It's more of an overall look which (I think) doesn't look good on him than flaws: he's got a big head and is rather short afaik, wide straight legged trousers and contrieved double breasted jacket wouldn't be my choice.
Elkann is just lost in a bad 80s movie with the wide, boxy shoulders and blue colour.

I'm not going to defend the silhouette or the fit, because I don't like it either. Or the tie, which makes the Fiat heir look like a scrawny kid at Bumblefuck County High going to his first prom, with a shirt borrowed from a European exchange student. Or the shoes. (Why are so many men today too effete to wear patent opera pumps with their tuxedos?) But I think you're off on the color. I suspect that the color of that tux is really a nice, deep midnite blue, and only looks garishly blue because of the camera's flash. At least, I hope that's the case.

But why the commotion over Tom Ford? Honestly, I've never seen a picture of him where I thought he was iconically stylish. He's either showing way too much chest hair or doing something else to make himself look sketchy. However, shoes aside I don't see this shot as looking that bad by his standards. I'm not crazy about the pants and I like DB tuxes to be 6x2 rather than 6x4 (though I'd never buy a regular suit in 6x2) but if I saw someone dressed like that at a formal function I wouldn't think to study what was wrong with his get-up.

Before reading any responses, I thought the two pictures were of the same guy at different events. They look quite a bit alike.

I don't think he's wearing midnight blue: midnight blue is very dark, almost blacker than black, in almost all lighting conditions. It only appears very slightly blue in direct sunlight, in my experience, but it's still hard to tell apart from black.

No way -- look how high it buttons. The bottom buttons (at pocket level) are unfastened.

Tom Ford is attempting to emulate Halston or a gigolo lost at Studio 54 without much victory at either.

Lapo Elkann must still be on drugs.
