-- I agree, I watched Dr. No again for the first time, the 1st 2/3 or that movie establish Bond and are really tremedous up to the silly Dr. No metal hands, plastic suit madness.
The key defining moment for me for the character, and mind you this was like 1963 and they did do it better is:
Bond is ruthless, the best scene is when he says, "You've had your six" after trying to acquire information from the geologist who had fired 6 shots into who he thought was Bond sleeping. Then Bond proceeds to shoot him not just once, but twice in the back while the guy is pretty much defenseless. So rather than take him in, this Bond just kills as a sweet, cold revenge. He is always calm about everything, well mannered, classy, suave, yet he can be a ruthless, cunning killer.
