This time of year I imagine it would be slim pickings, but my favorite places in SF are Rolo and American Rag. Worth a shot to check those out.

I am looking to buy a peacoat as a winter jacket.

I am looking for a tight fit and price range below 1000 dollars.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, I don't know if it's possible to find a decent peacoat for less than $1000. You might just have to slum and settle for one made out of SOLID PLUTONIUM.

agree with skagalore. go with the original, maybe one made by Sterlingwear. http://www.sterlingwear.com/

also, there have been a LOT of peacoat discussions in the past so definitely do a search of past threads.

Second the military surplus suggestion. That's where I got mine and it's served me very well these last few winters.

If you really meant $1000, I'm sure there are options in cashmere blends or something that might be nice. Personally I am happy with my milsurp coats, but if I could get one just like my favorite made with some really heavy cashmere/boiled wool blend that was a bit softer, I would probably enjoy that as well.

For a $1000 may as well go get one tailored from scratch

Just wanted to ask for some info on slimming down a peacoat. The sterlingwear one I got is a little boxy. What would you instruct the tailor to do? Taper it down? Take it in on the waist? Anyone have experience on this? Just wanted some instructions to give.

And do you think taking the shoulder pads would mess up the look of the peacoat?

a pea coat is supposed to be boxy. but if its too much. go ahead have it taken in but not too tight it should be straight sided. dont do the shoulders unless they are really far too wide.

sure, by definition, for their utilitarian purpose they're traditionally boxy but many designers have been making slim peacoats with a suppressed waist for years. what i'm curious about is, can just any tailor make these adjustments? with the thickness and weight of the materials involved could i just take a peacoat to be altered at the same place i would take a suit and dress shirt or would i need to take it somewhere that has more heavy duty equipment like say a shop that alters leather and suede?

right, I want to modernize my peacoat a bit. Where do I start the taper, at the armpit? And does it continually get slimmer as it hits the bottom?
