It is a WWII. They are getting hard to find these days. It has the nice thick and soft wool not found on coats made after 1979. You are lucky to have it come into your possession.

With that coat, I would definitely either move the buttons myself, or have someone do it for me. There will be a unique zig zag pattern of stitching holding the buttons on. You can follow that pattern for the authentic look, or do it another way if that is too much trouble. If you do it yourself, it might be a summertime project, as it will take a while. Also be careful to not sew through one of the exterior or interior pockets. Congratulations on a good vintage find.

Gave my 36R another try today and after taking it off B&S I'm putting it back up for sale. The fit is great when I'm not doing stuff. But after walking it around outside once, the sleeves are definitely not long enough. Also, arm holes are a little high. Doesn't help that my shoulders/chest are broad for my waist. Measurement recap: Chest: 38.5" Shoulders: 18.5" Waist: 31" So lmk if you're in the market for a pretty much brand new 36R (midnight navy--looks black) or are looking to size down from a 38R

IIRC it would be pre-WWII, with the 8 buttons and throat latch.

Thanks boys. You have no idea how much even getting the era down means, as well as the tips and leads. Would love to see if this made it overseas. I've done some military National Archive searches before on family...thinking the name 'Dacy' and his rank should be enough.

This jacket is in pristine condition, and there are so many small details to it's constrution I just don't see much anymore (except on Ricksons' type repros). Noted on the buttons. A few of the stronger ones still have the zig-zag threading, which I saw immediately.

Let's just say I went through some slight humiliation and did a big favor just to reclaim this from my ex (she had no idea it's value to me, thank god ;-)

Edit: Yep! Photo tag: "ww2 tag". Note stencilled name in same location too.

I tried that peacoat on, was neat but nothing special, especially for the price.

mlyngard- that's a beautiful p coat! I'm late to the game, but yeah, that's WWII or even a little earlier. The ten buttons, throat latch, and tag give it away. Those are very hard to find, and props to you for reviving it. I'm trying to figure out the buttons. In the unworn photos, it looks like the buttons are about two inches from the button holes, but on the fit pic they are farther. Is the fit pic how the buttons currently are placed? Or, did you just move the outside buttons away from the holes? It looks a little bit like this is the case, because the coat looks a little out of balance. If you can afford to lose a little space by moving the inside buttons away from the holes, I'd recommend you also move the outside buttons back to the same distance from the holes. Yeah, the fit on you is perfect, but you forgot to button the last button

I'd recommend you turn the throat latch upside down so it fits under the collar better. It looks like it is getting warped from the collar. Plus, if you turn it upside down, all you have to do is undo the top button and swing it down and it's ready to use. Or, you can leave it hanging on just the bottom button (see Fidelity coat above), which I think looks good. Enjoy the coat! It was worth a little humiliation to recover

heh, thanks for the advice zissou.
Buttons were moved by a previous owner (about 2-3 inches), and I can clearly see where they originally were. I'm considering locating them back to original location, with proper spec. sew pattern on them. I have plenty of room in the jacket now, so I think I'd enjoy and prefer the original fit.

Throat latch: hadn't paid much attention to it previouslty, but again, proevious owner must have put it back on upside down. Only just noticed that when looking at the picture, so thanks for pointing that out. The logic of the curve is clear, so when I looked, it was pretty obviously on wrong.

Must remember to button the bottom...old habits, right? For some reason, from wearing peas for a long time, I always just do the middle two, using the top and bottom as 'extra-cold' protection, which is about as helpful as zipping your jacket that last inch ;-)

Oh, you should definitely move the buttons back, then. I think it would look great and fit even better. Please post a fit pic afterward! I just think it's awesome that you found a true vintage in such great condition, especially considering that a repro of your coat is ~$750. I've recently liked the look of hanging throat latches, but I used to always keep mine stowed. Having them hang gives the coat a little more of a 'heavily used' look. I'm just giving you a hard time about the bottom button

Wear it how you want! I just get a bur in my side when someone says that the bottom button should not be buttoned. I'm always tempted to cite Naval Regulations* to them. *Naval Regulations mandate that all buttons of a pea coat are to be buttoned, with the exception of the collar (top) button, which is only fastened during inclement weather.

Ok, So I just got a Sterling Wear pea coat. It's a Size 34R, because my usually jacket size is 36R so I sized down. It fits VERY good, very snug on my body.

Please note in the picture I'm only wearing a plain white t shirt. Also I just took it out the box so thats why it looks wrinkled.

The sleeves however are short, can I lengthen this?

Overall I'm very happy.

i'm debating between this dark grey uniqlo (japan large) vs the grey sterlingwear... the uniqlo seems to fit me right with a slight box look although the sleeves are a touch long...

hopefully the sterlingwear grey comes in time for me to make a decision.

So I was given short notice by my work that I'd be sent away for a month to a place that could get 70 degrees colder than what I was used to(I'm from the bay area). Outside of my work jacket(which isn't all that warm), and a TAD Gear lined soft shell, I thought I should snag a peacoat with the few days I had to pack. I went and picked up whatever looked like it fit me and this what I ended up with:

Schott 740N in youth 16

I'm about 5'6", my chest is a hair over 35", and my weight usually fluctuates between 135-140lbs. The smallest available mens size I tried was a 34 and everyone agreed it was too big. Someone had just bought a youth 18 before I walked in, so this was my only choice if I wanted to leave with one(no one in town had anything close to my size either).

I'm picky when it comes to how wide my clothes are, so I like how it fits me well and doesn't look big. I can also move around just fine. My only gripe is that I wish the arms were maybe half an inch to an inch longer. It just barely covers my watch. Outside of that I thought it fits me fine, and so did the other people I ran into that day after I picked it up. EXCEPT my mom. She thinks it looks like I borrowed it.

So what do you guys think? Should I sell it when I get back and buy the next size up? Or should I just keep it? Thanks.
