The popped collar looks ridiculous. It is really theatrical looking. Reminds me of the "evil ruler" from some cheesy science fiction movie from the 70's. For example, Flash Gordon...

Okay okay, it doesn't look good on everybody or on every coat, I'll say that much. But take a comparison on page 99 of teger. His collar up improves the look versus collar down. While on tehdvd, and whynot on pages 103 and 104 it does not. For whynot, it could be because the picture was a low perspective, but with tehdvd I think it only emphasized that the coat was too boxy in the shoulders. That's why people say it’s better to be yourself and do whatever feels right to you. If you feel like a douche with your peacoat popped, chances are... it doesn't look so hot on you or that specific peacoat isn't working for this given look either. When I say it doesn't look douchey it doesn't mean it cannot possibly look douchey, it can. I wouldn't wanna' see my grandma in a gstring either but it doesn't look bad on my girlfriend.

Lesson of the day: certain people can rock certain **** that others can't and vice versa. Do not generalize with fashion trends.

Hey everybody, I've been lurking here a while but now have a reason to register/post...looking for some expert help.

I just got a vintage WWII pea coat in the mail. It's a size 36, 10 button front, corduroy pocket liners (yada yada, etc. etc.), made in Brooklyn. It fits me well, definitely less boxy than I'd expected, but there's a problem with it: when buttoned, the buttons orient themselves down the middle of my chest, and the second row sits off center. If I button it the opposite way (US female style), the coat becomes extremely slim.

At a casual glance, it's fine -I won't be too self concious about wearing it as it fits well otherwise and is extremely heavy, which is what I wanted- but does anyone know why this might be? Maybe it was intended for a female? I'm pretty sure there wouldn't have been females in the Navy during that time period, though.

Moving the buttons doesn't seem to be an option. If I move them, the coat will be very, very slim.

Edit: pics

I am not certain, but it looks like it might be a defect. Trying to move the buttons is a bad idea. I think it's pretty cool and unique that it's asymmetrical to be honest, lol. Let's see it on.

Buttons have been re-sewn to accomodate an owner's additional girth, breasts, etc. Common. Esp. on that kind of vintage. My '60's one had the same issue, but I could see where the original buttons had been sewn. May not even be the original buttons...

PS - beautiful coat though. Awesome.

So, I'm tattling too. Look at this blasphemy from BB1 over in the 'I'd never wear...' threak:

Thanks for the quick responses! I wore it out tonight and I'm a pretty big fan. Fits well. Thanks to Major General W. Kassa for apparently never wearing it, haha. I'll see if I can get a picture of how the buttons sit when the coat is on tomorrow.

It turns out my old peacoat that I thrifted is actually an imitation military pea coat and not an authentic military issue. bummer.

Some girls really dig that, dude. It's okay...

I'm sure there aren't any fans of American eagle here, I only like a few things they have had over the years. But I like the look of their peacoat. I went around a few malls yesterday trying to find a peacoat that fits and nothing did. I tried on a small from express and it was still a little big. The only thing I can find for under 200 that will fit is the xs in the AE peacoat.

When you see peacoats at Target, you know the piece has long since ceased to be avant garde and has become pedestrian. Really, peacoats were getting tiresome last year. Do you know anybody who wears the Michael Jackson/catwalk-military look?

Some folks asked about blue peacoats. I saw one in Macy's. Again, peacoats are either black or midnight blue. Bright blue peacoats are effeminate. What's next? Discard the pants and wear peacoats over stockings?

No one wears a pea coat to be "avant garde," and if they do, they're extremely misguided. There's a reason this type of coat has been worn and essentially unchanged for decades upon decades- it's a classic style. Also, they've been readily available in stores like Target for many years. And not that anyone did, but if you ask me it's a little backward to buy your clothes based on what's sold to the so-called 'average person.' They sell jeans are Target, too, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna start wearing a skirt for the sake of being different.
