I'm confused as to why they told you the authentic was their warmest, as on the website they show the "classic" as having a heavier 32 oz shell. The classic also has a less flamboyant collar, which is partly why I'm leaning towards that one.

Anyway, let us know how it turns out. I'm a tad larger than you in the chest, but 3" taller (35" chest, 6'2") , so I think I'll need an 34XL or 36XL. I also think the 8 button look would work better with my height.

Also, to anyone who's gotten a non-black coat recently (I'm eying the oxford gray), does it take much longer to ship than the standard black?

He may be asking about body length, not sleeve length.

If so, I would judge where it hits on your body instead of your hands/fingertips (assuming the sleeve length is OK). Generally hitting mid-hip or a few inches longer is a good target but use your judgment on how it looks on you with respect to your proportions. Better to err on the side of longer than shorter though.

I believe the lady said the authentic has the fleece lining which is why its warming. I'm really picky about my clothes so i'm most likely going to regret getting size 36. What i should have done was purchase 36 and 34

I hope this fits because shipping cost is killing me.

Regarding the shoulder comment, size 32 was way too tight, i dont think i was able to relax my body and stand up straight, which is why i thought one size up wouldnt do much and still be pretty tight. Remember i was wearing a crewcut tee under.

Sure the Schotts was thicker and heavier but it was also way too boxy and I just hate the buttons. The uniqlo coat is lighter but feels great and will handle the cold just well.

I am interested in the Uniqlo peacoat as well. Can you post a fit pic?

Since I was confused a bit at first, I figured I should bring this back up here, and I know not everyone is going to sift through a thread this size.

After hunting back a bit in this megathread of crazy, I read that apparently the 32oz shell in the "classic" (8 button) sterlingwear coat makes it feel a lot bulkier and stiffer, leading to a worse drape. The consensus seems to be that the "authentic" model is the slimmest looking cut (even though all cuts seem to be straight down) with the help of the back vent.

tehdvd - make sure to post your thoughts whenever you get your new size in. That will probably help me choose between the 34 and 36.

'Hate to do this -- well not really -- but the plot thickens: I spoke to Michele the point gal at Sterlingwear of Boston wanting to get clarity on their peacoats and it turns out that in addition to the four pea variants they offer, there is yet another, a fifth, called the "Spec". The Spec is no way a copy of the government-issue jacket, but is the genuine article made to the exact specifications of the current US Navy issue. Michele said it is available only through the factory and is, of course, more expensive. It differs from their closest variant, the Authentic, in that it is made with a more closely woven, 100% wool material (more wind resistant) dyed a deep navy -- almost black -- and is put together with heavier stitching. There may be other details, can't remember. I'm ordering one in 42 long. I normally wear a 40 long, but Michele's recommending you go up a size or two. I'm only going up one size as I'd like a more fitted look. Price is $250. If this coat gets close to the WWII-era peacoat I had when I was a kid in the Eighties, I'll be very happy. Those babies were in a class of their own.

That's what their website says to do with all their peacoats, but the general consensus has been that this will result in a fairly large coat. Generally I've seen it recommended to size normally for a regular fitting jacket and one (sometimes two) sizes down for a very fitted jacket.

my dress shirts are 36" sleeve length. my chest is in between 42-43". i wear a 42L suit. should i go with 42L in the Sterlingwear Authentic? or a 42XL? i assume 40 would be too small, and 44 too big.

O yeah for sure, I want to make sure people dont have to spend so much for shipping like i did. But if you're torn between the two, just order both. I regret not doing that. If i have to return it one more time i'm gonna expload and maybe buy some UPS stock?

There was mention of this last winter and i considered it but when I tried on the authentic I was happy enough and warm enough. Do you know if the spec version is the same cut as the authentic? I assume that it is the same with just a more dense weave and in that case you shouldve sized the same as an authentic. I guess we'll see.
