My heart bleeds, I am part of that latch key generation called X/Baby busters/13th Generation. I had the wonderful fortune of graduating from University the recession of the early 1990s, so tell me something I don't already know, it was nasty just out of school but we eventually found our way. The only thing I don't envy with the millenials/Gen Y is the fact they will be fighting with their parent's generational cohort (the baby boomers who saw their 401K/ RRSPs vapourise) for scarce jobs until this financial enema runs it's course.

Why don't you just try getting out of California itself, the state in general is just not doing that well it has one of the highest employment rates. I mean I don't know much about California but I from what I've heard from my dads friends is that its a pretty cut-throat city. Connections are probably more important than any other thing. Also why did you not get an internship while you were in undergrad? Everybody that I know has been offered jobs after they've completed school through the busines they interned for. Also Law school and sitcom writing? Pick one and decide what you want to do. Which law school do you want to attend?

^ i live in houston which supposedly is doing ok as far as employment rates go. i still have no job

Anyway, look at it this way. What's your earning potential now? $60K in debt is not outrageous if you have a secure career. If you go back for Masters in Accounting program at a reputable school, and get good grades, you most likely will be able to get a decent starting salary, and you will have a pretty secure career unless you manage to fuck it up. I've seen CPAs working corporate jobs hit six figures well before 30yo.

Thank you. Are you a CPA now? My ideal route would be to finish the program and get into the Big 4, and I know 1 masters program would give me a better opportunity. I just don't like how they tack on 30 more credits for an MBA (not sure I'd want my MBA from this school). It's only a little more expensive than the other schools though despite the fact that it's 30 more credits. I also have some connections to employees in the Big 4, but I'm not sure they would be that helpful right now.

If I could land one of these jobs that pay $50k+ I'd be less worried, but if I end up just as unemployed as before I'd grab a toaster and jump in my bath tub.

Omg, this.

I'm in school for my MBA and I'm trying to get basic administrative jobs on just 2 years experience. And I'm competing against people twice my age with 10-15 year experience; it's ridiculous.

My story exactly...after more than 3 years of marginal (read: minimum wage) employment to gain experience and basically pay for a shithole bachelor apartment and Habitant pea soup 7x a week, the commercial Interwebz came along and swept me up in its marvellous money-generating wave.

I talk to younger people all the time who are worrying about graduation, and/or the shitty job they're saddled with straight out of school ("zomg, i've been here nearly a year already!!!|") and I tell them relax, don't make any major mistakes, and you'll be fine.

I have to agree with Flambeur on this one. Right now, the business market is in need of analysts with hard skills. It may suck, but take as many applied mathematics or econometrics classes as you can to give yourself an edge. Take those courses in addition to an Accounting major and you'll do well for yourself.

I didn't go to my college's business school, but I applied for interviews through the business school and got second rounds with all of the companies I interviewed with. I eventually landed a job with a company this way. Granted, if you don't have those "hard skills" you can be the most ambitious person in the world and still be out of your element.

To the OP: it is too late to change the past. Suck it up and go back to your old job, and wait for better times. Now is not the best time to try and get into law schools, especially with your GPA and alma mater. While both are fairly strong, your competition is stiffer than it has been in awhile. Plus, if you are uncomfortable with your undergrad debt, law school is far from inexpensive.

i'm gonna disagree. a 3.14 GPA on a PoliSci degree isn't very likely to land you in top 15 law now, or in the future, even if you scrounge up a 170 on the LSAT. you'll definitely want to get in at least top 15 otherwise you'll face a repeat of what you're going through now. i think your best bet is to grab a second bachelors in bus/fin/accounting seeing as how you got your basic requirements done already. yeah you will rack up more debt but at least you'll be better positioned to join the work force.

+1.

To be blunt, it sounds like the OP hasn't even done background on his options, or even hit reality. Unless you have a 3.7+ from a top 30 undergrad and a 165+ with great recc's, you're not going to get into a law school that is worth the debt. Plus, with his career ADD, I don't think he's demonstrated a real determination to drive through the "suck" that is L1 even if he does get in.

I don't know him, so this is purely speculation. Just trying to help before the illusions get to crazy. I would want the same.

pokey07: I'm not sure where you are located, but I would look at defense/federal consulting or contracting agencies. The pay is OK, but they are hiring a bunch of people right now.
