I have an idea: send the youth of America off to institutions of higher-learning for 4-8 years. And for what? Once they graduate they must enter the "real world" with the burden of debt weighing on their shoulders. Great system!

Here's the kicker: Even the dudes who graduated at the top of the class cant land jobs but the dudes who just skated by on C's are getting hooked up. Or even better, the people who DIDNT go to college and barely graduated high school got jobs (4-5 years before me!) and now are paid better than the dudes who got hooked up with jobs right out of college!

I understand these are shitty times, but realistically, accepting that doesnt help anything.

Even further, there is no more American Dream. You know, come to America where hard work and determination will get you somewhere. All the great American endeavors have been conquered. The idea of becoming whatever you want to be died with my generation along with the dotcom bust. It has become increasingly difficult to break into new avenues of business considering all of the big players have been around for a while.

My parents generation wasnt hellbent on higher-learning, but somehow University became the so-called breeding ground for America's great minds. Thats bullshit. If anything, Universities just got a great PR/Marketing firm to boost their attendance.

So whats the point of this rant? I really dont know, Im just frustrated that someone like myself (and people much brighter and more gifted) is having a hard time finding employment when all my life I was lead to believe that with education and determination, anything is possible. Thats not true. That was my parents generation. My generation has had it too easy with utilization of the internet that meritocracy has become obsolete.

I was expecting to hit 6 figures before turning 30

any other jaded twenty-somethings?

haha, well the point of the rant is the uselessness of Universities and taking on $70k in debt before you actually begin any real "work" And its also about the general shittiness of recent college grads who dont see the use for their degree when others who arent as "qualified" have already been working and earn a decent living and i guess the third part would be how my generation cant build a great empire like the rockefellers because everything has been done before

networking, working a room, etc. is a skill that people (like myself) need to cultivate to get jobs. i don't know how things worked for previous generations, but this has become increasingly apparent to me since finishing college. and--at least for me--it is/has not a super easy skill to learn but, with practice, i am much better at it than i was 5 years ago.

With few exceptions, if you have $70k in debt from school there is something very wrong. I managed to get through grad school with FAR less than half that. In fact, my wife has a BS, and I have a BA and an MPA. Our debt combined isn't close to $70k, and she went to a private school for three semesters. Neither of us comes from a wealthy family, so it wasn't like our families paid the way, either.

Moreover, not everyone coming out of school is unemployed. I finished grad school in May, and I had a job within a month. It wasn't what I wanted to do, but it was a paycheck. The job blew, but I took it because I'm an adult who does what he has to do. I was very fortunate to find a great job shortly thereafter, and that let me leave the job I didn't like, but I would have stuck with the job I didn't like for as long as I had to.

I acknowledge that times are tough, but I'm really sick of the kids 5-8 years younger than I am whining about how the world isn't worshipping at their feet. With only one exception, everyone I know from grad school has a job. They're not all doing exactly what they want, but they're employed because they're willing to do what it takes to make things work until the economy is better.

When i was in school going to college was exceptional, today, college is a big business and has become a extension of high school. Parents heard their children to colleges like its a free pass to earning a living, but are shock to find their kids unemployed after graduating, and graduates end up doing everyday jobs just to make some money.

With college enrollments up record numbers, college fees are also raising, did you ever hear of a college lowering their tuition... because its a money maker. Liberals are against wall street making too much money.... oil companies making too much money.... banks making too much money... but for some reason parents and kids going into hock to pay college loans of 30, 40, 60k a year tuition. Colleges go unquestioned charging crazy prices with this mind set of being legit and increase overlooked.

The president could use that stimulus money to help parents pay for college tuitions/educations student loans, instead we bailed out GM, banks and handed out money to the city of Detroit. Your feeling the crunch from a different angle, you thought you'd get that sheepskin and have it made... oops

I am lucky that I have connections. I don't have any talents or intellect so without them I'd be FUBAR'd. My suggestion is to network, network, network.

The college thing obviously guarantees nothing. It's more of a necessary evil. As we've talked about in my other long thread on this, there are things kids have to know before they graduate that are of utmost importance. It's not as easy is "Hay, I graduated, where my high-paying job with an awesome career path at?"

Almost 25, single, living at home with a couple of hundred to my name Graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a 3.14 and earned a Bachelor's in Political Science. Got a decent marketing gig a week after graduation in a different town. My connections were used to get that spot as my cousin owns the business. Moved in with my then gf of 3 years. Worked there for a year and hated it. Ended the relationship. Quit (yes, i quit) in order to figure out my next move and to just have time to myself. (In long term relationships since 16 and no awesome fiun after graduating college). Decided to pursue law school and am currently looking for a job to support my endeavors through law school. Now im trying to get to LA to have my chance at attending law school and sitcom writing and it's harder than balls to get any work in a town 6 hours away thats so saturated with (seemingly) brighter people who all probably have stronger connections than i do. (and more reputable degrees). If this keeps up for another few weeks I might just end up working for my cousin again

where so exactly? Its nice to get someone elses perspective I know quitting the job before landing another one was bad. SO was wasting all that time to apply for law school. Moving in with the gf at the time wasnt so smart, too. this is better (cheaper) than therapy!
