Trying to convince the wife to do Santa Fe after Xmas, maybe through NYE. Any suggestions? I've only ever stopped in for a day, and figure the goal is to stay someone near the Plaza. Looking for eats, events, etc.

We've done Oaxaca. We went with a Mexican couple, he's from Mexicali, she's from Oaxaca. He's 6'5" and about 350#, very laid back and pleasant guy. Great person to go there with. We've done Puerto Penasco, with plans to return, and a couple of other Mexican locales.
Just looking for something new and a little off the beaten path.

To stay: Inn of the Anasazi and La Posada de Santa Fe
To eat: Santacafe for dinner and Cafe Pasqual for breakfast. For a more local option, try Tomassita's and The Shed. But there's tons of nice places to stay and to eat. Kind of hard to go wrong. It's cold at that time, but not brutal.

Thanks for the tips, will look them up.

Lived for a while in albuqueruque and went to sf frequently.
There are a number of fabulous restaurants. Had a very memorable post thanksgiving meal at Pauls in the early mind 90s.
Taos is not that far and great skiing. Red River and angel fire are equally distant. Santa Fe ski area is decent but one can get back into town for dinner etc easily.
The anasazi ruins in Bandelier are great. Ojo Caliente is worth a visit. A little rustic (at least when I went there) but memorable. tenthousandwaves is more gentrified/asian type.
Can check out the ranch that Georgia O'keefe stayed at (now donated to University of New Mexico). The GoK museum is supposed to be, I will go there next trip.
Hot springs in Jemez, great mountain biking and skiing (depending on snow conditions). If you are a low lander , rec spending a night in albuquerque on way to sf. Might help you deal with the altitude better.
NM is really the land of enchantment.

Are you planning on buying a lot of turquoise pendants, mediocre pottery, or paintings of naked Native Americans/Horses? Is there some other reason you'd go to Santa Fe?
Just something different, a little laid back, and hopefully not crowded that time of year. We have a friend that's opened an art gallery on the Plaza too.

If I were you, I'd spend 3 days in Sonoma rather than a week in Santa Fe.
But that's just me.
But that's just me.

That was my original plan. We'll see. Might end up staying home too.

Thanks for the recs. Altitude is no problem. We just go to bed early the first night. Works whenever we travel (we live at 3k ft, so that helps).

We were there Xmas '02. Lots of fun. Good food. Stayed at the Inn of the Anasazi which was pretty nice - you could go down a notch or two (or up) and still enjoy yourself. Spa thing is a good option (even for you, def. missus pio). As TS hinted, the art scene is a little much, but there are some nice galleries. O'Keefe & folk art museums are good. A couple of nice, old historic churches to see. FOr your new kitchen: http://www.rainbowgate.com/AboutUs.asp
Xmas eve on Canyon Rd was sorta fun, depending on your LHT. Bobcat Bite! Also if you want to get out of town for a night head over to Espanola: http://www.ranchodesanjuan.com/# Nice place and you can use it to access Abiqu/Ghost Ranch if you have any interest....
If there is dancing going on a Pueblo trip can be interesting: http://www.santaana.org/calendar.htm

i go to santa fe a couple times a year. have family and friends. good food as long as you like new mexican (i do ... was the only restaurnat critic in the state back in the early '80s). my recs: cafe pasqual for a kind of californian take on new mexican; la choza for really good, down-home new mexican; tortilla flats for even more down-home (converted fast-food restaurant). there's lots of other higher-end places, but i don't go to santa fe to eat second-rate versions of what i could get in la. if you like design, The Compound up on Canyon road has very good food and is in Alexander Girard's old house. great structure. for recreation, i second bandelier, and if you have the time a run to Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch are indeed cool (particularly if you are a georgia o'keefe fan). the new history museum on the square is a real pleasure. the back road to taos through truchas is really nice, too.

I don't know if it's still around, but we had a dynamo 'meal-of-the-trip' at Geronimo one time, but were slightly disappointed on subsequent visits. I think SantaCafe is still operating, but never ate there. I remember Cafe Esteban being good (and nice room), and had a memorable BYOB Xmas Eve meal at a relatively new spot called Tulips (don't know if it's still around). Down 'n Dirty? Bert's Burger Bowl, Harry's Roadhouse, Bobcat Bite (already mentioned), & for Plaza dining have had a couple of perfectly non-objectionable meals at the Shed. Local color? My cousin recommended Maria's (which was good), but said Tiny's wasn't so great....
The day after Xmas we drove down to Cerillos(?), an old mining ghost town to look around, and stopped at one of the Pueblos on the way back.....
