To dye a sweater...

Okayyyyyy. This is an odd request, but does anybody know if I can dye a sweater into a different color? Preferably white? Is it possible?

My dilemma is that I can't find a damn sweater in the style that I like. All I want is a medium white sweater with a shawl collar, and nobody seems to have it!? If anybody knows the easier way of solving the problem (that is actually finding this sort of sweater) that would great as well. I've looked around all the place and keep seeing these shawl collar sweaters in every other color imaginable, but white. I've also learned that Ralph Lauren seems to make half of all these sweaters in the world, which I don't mind.

Most of them are cashmere though, which is great because I love spending 800 dollars on a sweater that I really don't care what type of fabric it has. (actually no)

So, is it possible?

Actually I have one from RLPL in white, so keep your hopes up.

Most sweaters like that will be only "winter white", but you may find something. I don't think you can "dye" things white - the best you could hope for is to remove all the color.

Another option is to have one custom knit. There is a company most of whose business seems to be making custom Harry Potter sweaters, but they also seem to make any sweater you want: http://www.wizardknits.com

There are a couple of other custom sweater places on the net. I have no idea of the quality, but you may find some info via a search. (Try custom sweater)

I've wondered about dyeing a cotton sweater as well. It's a baby blue RLPL shawl collar cardigan. I'd like to make it black. Anyone have any advice on an easy way to make it darker rather than lighter?

It's not a do-it-yourself project, but you could try contacting these people near me to ask for input - they really know their stuff:

Thank you j for the link. I guess I'll just keep scouring for now. I really love that shawl collar look, especially in a white or an off-white color.
