Do you really think a cold is caused by bacteria?

I've taken just about everything listed here and it doesn't seem to have much effect. Long showers and spicy pho will clear you up for an hr or two. I also get as much sleep as I can, avoid fever suppressants, and cancel everything I can afford to just to stay home and relax.

I like theraflu powder (mixed with hot water). Great before bed. (It has acetaminophen so don't OD on acetaminophen with other medications). The best part about getting a cold is that it builds your immunity for a few months. A nurse told me that getting a flu shot every year reduces the incidence of colds (both viruses). Not sure if that's true or not, but I only get one or two colds per season.

Zicam is great.

Gargling with salt-water and/or using ocean drops nasally also inhibits viral reproduction. Generic ocean drops are fine, but don't get cheap and try to use homemade salt water in your nose. (Trust me on that.) Do this every few hours at the first sign of symptoms. It will not alleviate any of your symptoms, but any help you can provide your body in fight of the infection will shorten the duration of the cold.

Also, phlegm's viscosity is lower at higher temperatures. It becomes more watery and mucousy. This is why your nose runs after eating chicken soup. The cilia in your respiratory tract will clear a low viscosity fluid much better than a high viscosity one.

No, but during a compromise, bacteria will begin to flourish. This is why you will often see Strept throat in conjunction with the cold. This is also why doctors will prescribe antibiotics even though something is viral such as the cold. If you can help the body kill off bacteria, then the body's defenses will be alleviated to fight the virus. I wish Bush knew about this when he wanted to invade Iraq. Raising the temperature will kill viruses as well as bacteria. It will also kill any host cells that is infected with the virus since those cells will have such high metabolic rates that it will induce oxydative damage and/or the proteins will become damaged. Getting colds to boost the immune is not a good idea. Some of the body's own defenses can cause permanent damage to host tissues. Get vaccinated.

In addition to some of the things already suggested, I recommend taking 1000 mg of vitamin C as soon as you feel like you might be getting sick. Supposedly halves the severity and duration of symptoms. Has worked well for me over the past 15 yrs or so.

Why?

Vitamin C from oranges is reduced by at least 80% in five days after being picked off the tree. When fruit is picked off the tree it is no longer living. Best to eat living foods high in Vitamin C, Selenium, Zinc, Calcium and other important nutrients.

l don't use supplements, they mainly exist to make companies money. lf supplements were so effective then why are people still so sick? Supplements will never make up for unhealthy eating because they lack sufficient synergy.
