Braces?

Any one have adult braces? How was it? My teeth are a 7/10 right now as far as straightness goes. I am looking at getting invisalign up top (4 trays) and wire braces on bottom for about 6 months. Dentist wants $3600 (-10% for paying up front), and insurance will cover $1500. He's also going to file down teeth, pretty them up, put wires behind to retain them afterwards, and make me whitening trays for this price. Does this sound alright for a bit more expensive (+nitrous happy) dentist?

I got braces when I was 30, wire on top and bottom, wore them for 30 months (you will prob need to wear longer as an adult). Not much discomfort - only when they changed wires did I really notice any soreness. The biggest issues I had were speaking clearly (annunciation) along with keeping them clean. Invest in a waterpik... Also take into account that you will need to wear retainers every day for at least a year after they come out, and likely a number of years after that several times a week. Price is about right...

Price sounds right. I have them now. Braces suck but are a worthwhile investment. It's weird to get used to when you look like an adult but have the teeth of a preteen. Once you get over that though, it's not bad.

This is one of those ends justify the means things. Do it.

No, it entirely depends on the treatment, retainers are not always ubiquitous.

I was about to make a thread on this, but I'm 17 and thinking about getting braces, my top teeth are "excellent" to quote the dentist, but the bottom teeth are pretty messed up and there's one that's sticking out of my gums though you can't notice unless I pull my lip down. It'll suck but I've decided to go for it and get it off for university. Wish I got them when I was 14 or something though.

I had braces as a kid/teenager but having wisdom teeth for years, not having a retainer, having 4 bicuspids removed to make room (teeth have tendency to shift) I saw my buddy last night, he is just getting out of dental school, his dad is doing the braces for me. He has lower braces on now and invisalign up top ( he had braces as a kid too, both parents are dentists ). He told me the wire they use is a lot better then the old ones, also the brackets are better now and don't need rubber bands/constant dentist/ortho visits. Truthfully not incredible noticeable.

I don't know about braces, but I'm doing invisalign and it cost me out of pocket almost 4g's.

Insurance covered another 1500 or 2500.

My teeth weren't jacked, but I guess I'm a slight perfectionist.

Price is pretty good if you ask me. I got my braces taken off a couple years ago. Had them on for 18 months. My monthly visits and follow ups cost me $4900, that's with a discount for paying up front.

Are you convinced invisalign can do the same as braces? If so, $3,--- would definitely be worth it, especially if insurance will pony up some dough, which they didn't do for me!

I'd definitely say do it. I got braces in college (not the best of times) for two years. I am so happy with my teeth now... I get compliments all the time. Do it!

I'm in the process of getting them. I was supposed to get them back in highschool, but I just couldn't be asked; not out of social reasons, just didn't want to go through the hassle.

Glad I didn't get them then and am getting them now. If I had gotten them back then I would have had to remove a few teeth (2 bicuspids I believe), this is of course before TMJ hit mainstream and became part of the treatment plan.

Look into it, and don't be afraid to get a 2nd, or even 3rd opinion; put aside the fact that he's a friend's father.

Good Luck

I had the wire braces in my mid 20s. Even though they made me look dorky, they took some years off my looks that I was able to hit on younger girls. The invisalign was just coming out then, so it was out of my price range. I say go for it.

You are going to a dentist, not an orthodontist?

Correct, he apparently does a lot of orthodontic work though.
