I did a short exchange in Russia and the experience was really good. The family I was put with was very young (mid 30s) and super cool, which made the experience even better. I would definitely recommend it. Even if the family you're put with sucks, there's still a lot of value in learning a culture you might not ever experience, meeting new and interesting people with different perspectives on a lot of things, stuff like that.
