nope,
When my friend was stealing it, he was being chased, so he threw the lens to the side to distract them...

no receipt, I'd assume it still has a year warranty (they base that off the serial #, I think)

Hard to have a receipt with a stolen item

On a serious note, Nikon doesn't allow transfer of warranties and requires a proof of purchase I believe. This can be checked out on the Nikon website.

The D40 is a great camera ( particularly as a first DSLR ) and is sturdy. I've got one that fell off a truck Maybe one day I'll sell it on SF if I get off my lazy ass.

If anyone buys this, they will be happy.

Please, please, please do not have the camera body facing up without the a lens or lens cap! And always talk off a lens while the opening is pointing down. All of this is to help prevent dusty entry into the camera body. Just for future reference! By the way, how many actuations on this camera?

For anyone put off by OP's lack of lens, I have a Nikon 18-55 lens I'll sell you for $60 shipped in CONUS (last 2 ebay transactions were for $66 and $80 plus shipping).SOLD

The lens cap was off for 30 seconds while I took the picture, otherwise it's been on...
There should be 0 actuations since the camera is brand new - I don't think it's even been turned on yet!

Where does a D40 rank in terms of awesomeness in the world of DSLR's? I'm considering making my first jump into the world of DSLR's.

D40 is one of the most basic DSLR's you can get. It's Nikon's lowest model (I think). I'm also considering this as I'd save nearly $100 over anywhere else...
