Any chance you travel a lot? IIRC, there was a company that set up in several of American Airlines' Admirals Clubs across the country taking measurements for these new custom shoes, made by computer, for a fraction of what regular bespoke shoes cost. A day pass to the AC is only $50, and if you have a layover of more than two hrs, it's not a bad deal. Or wait till your next int'l flight in F or J, and you will get a free pass (if you are on AA, or another OW carrier, that is).

I wonder if this is the same outfit I saw set up in a mall kiosk recently. (I forget where.) I wasn't impressed with the leather or construction.

I have 3 or 4 pair of Bruno Maglis and I feel BM gets a bum rap in some respects. The soles on my two favorite pair wore out ridiculously quickly, but these two pairs of shoes also have some of the softest leather of any shoes I have ever seen in person. For somebody such as me, who frequently has foot pain on the side of my foot where a bone jutts out, this softness of the leather is huge. I also own several pairs of AE's, a pair of C&J for Polo shoes, a pair of Sutor Mantellasis (I love the marbling on those!), and several cheaper brands. My BM's are far and away the most comfortable, entirely due to the soft leather that's used. If it means that the shoes won't last as long, so be it. I'm willing to sacrifice some longevity for comfort.

Obviously, if all shoes are equally comfortable to you, then go with something better made or more sleekly styled, but my BM's are comfy and that's important to me. BTW, you can find BM's on discount pretty regularly if you search. I haven't paid more than 50% of retail for any of mine.

I find quality Italian shoes -- with certain exceptions -- to be more expensive than quality British or American shoes. I don't think a Bruno Magli is of comparable quality to C&J, for instance.

In the around $300 range I'd recommend calling Ron Rider; I'd recommend Martegani, I'd recommend C&J from plal, I'd recommend Alfred Sargent Premiers, Albaladejo (incredible shoes for the price), Loding, Donegan, Tricker's, and Allen Edmonds and Alden.

Can anybody recommend which of these makers use soft, flexible leather? I like for shoes to start off soft, not get softer with wear.

Were my two pairs part of that bunch? (croses fingers)
