Mountain Bicycles - Help Decide

I have been shopping for a new mountain bike for several months. I have narrowed it down to a Trek 6700. Bad news, it is sold out for the year. Good news there is a Trek 8000 in my size and it is on sale. Bad news it still cost alot more than a 6700 at full price. Is the 8000 that much better than the 6700?

How much are you looking to spend?

Where are you buying the bike? You can get 10% off any an bike at International Bike Center if you are a member of WBUR in Boston (or if you join for $60). The difference in retail is what, $700? How much more is the 8000 on sale? It's certainly worth a couple hundred dollars, the Reba is a much nicer fork. I'd be just as happy with the SRAM on the 6700 as the Shimano on the 8000. But if you can't get the 6700 this year, what other choices do you have. Did you call around to see if anyone else has them around here?

I am not a member if WBUR.

2009 6000 on sale for 725.

2009 8000 on sale for around 1500-1600. Forgot the % discount on 1900.

2010 6700 is 1350 at IBC.

I have been going to a few bike shops in and around boston.

I have seen bicycle sales at the beginning and at the end of the season. Are they mostly on old stock?

Oddly enough, bike manufacturers have a model year quite similar to car manufacturers.
New models become available in the fall.

Usually there aren't major changes from year to year and changes are mostly cosmetic but you do have to check that spec sheet closely.
If you can find something in your size, this is usually a pretty good time of year to buy last year's model as there will typically be deals available.

anyone here likes GIANT? it's a taiwanese bicycle maker. they make quality stuff for good value. the brand enters little western endurance racing and may not sound prestigious. but theyre really good in asia.

i recommend the GIANT ANTHEM mountain bike series...

he's looking for a hardtail, and the anthem is an xc-oriented full sus. i'm not familiar with trek's models, but i've been looking at marin mtb hardtails... good design, pretty lightweight... the indian fire trail is a nice bike imho.

But the price is way above the Trek 6700. The Trek is slightly above my price range but I might strech it abit to pick it up.

I assume you called (or had them call) the International out in West Newton, right? They have a bigger inventory.
Could you just ask for the more expensive components to be traded out? I don't know how the pricing works, I have a trek 8000 and the final price was what is was because the brakes had been upgraded, the seat, the pedals etc. I don't know what the "base price" was and I don't know what the upgrades added, I just wanted the bike and wanted him to stop talking.

So if the bike has upgraded components the dealer might trade them out to get the price to your range to make the sale.

No, i did not call. All they did was look in their inventory at the computer and said that they were all gone for the year but they can order a new 2010 6700 for $1350. Or I can have the 8000 now.

What is the likelihood that a bike shop would take pieces off an 8000 to get it to somewhere around 1300? The suspension and breaks are nice to keep. What would they consider swaping out?
Not like they can sell it new without boxes and paper (I mean there are on-line places that sell new w/o box or paper, but most shops would not). Unless they had a specific need for it (building a bike or a mechanic who needed the stuff), I can't imagine why they would do it.

If I was getting a hardtail, it would be difficult to convince me not to get a 29er.
