Some of these players, I would say, are underrated only to the extent they are not considered the best. And if you're not the best, you will be overshadowed by the one who is considered the best at the time. Sampras. No one underrates him, but he has been surpassed (at least in # of grand slams) by Federer, so all the talk is going to revolve around Federer. But I don't think anyone interested in the sport has forgotton all of Sampras' accomplishments.

Montana is on everyone's list of top 5 QBs. Or at least should be.

People speak of Bird in the same breath as Jordan and Magic, neither of whom are underrated or underappreciated.

I heard Ronnie Lott give a talk a few years ago, and he said something to the effect of:

anybody good enough to be a pro believes he can beat the other team. Some few players are so good that they make their teammates believe that they will, somehow, beat the other team, but, to his knowledge, only Jordan, Montana and Tiger Woods made the other team, at all times, convinced that they would do something that would beat them.

Fred Lynn
Vida Blue
Goose Gossage
Earl Campbell
Jim Brown
These are good ones. Also, Fred Dean.

To the boxing fans from the overrated thread, would you put Max Bear in the "underrated"? Yes, his career was not what it could have been, due to his personal antics, but over 50 wins by K.O.? Killed what was it? Two or three guys?

New title for this thread: "Athletes worshipped as demi-gods or pagan gods who should be worshipped as THE ONE TRUE GOD."

lawyerdad was on the right track, but he did not quite capture it.

Duncan, I agree with, whole-heartedly. San Antonio thought he would be a nice addition to back up The Admiral. Even then underestimated him.

I like Horry a LOT but iirc, his game is wielding the dagger at the end, and not much else. When the Rockets drafted him everyone was pissed that we passed on Harold Miner. So much for that.

This is quite good. I will remember this for Dumb Threads.

Really? My friends and I knew he was a monster back in the day. If anything, I'd call him unfairly forgotten.

Hmmm. Maybe mildly underrated in the boxing world, but largely forgotten by the public, to be sure. I think it hurt his image to lose the title like he did.

Ichiro is incredibly underrated, oftentimes even by Seattle fans.
A-Rod has been underrated for several years (while being the highest-paid baseball player ever, he's still been underpaid by about $40 million since 2002).
Adrian Beltre!

+1. How anybody can consider most of these guys underrated is beyond me. Steve's list is ridiculous.
