Gourmet to close

Surprising news! Conde Nast, with the sage advice of McKinsey's' minions, is closing Gourmet. I'm not a subscriber, but I know a few who are passionate about the magazine. Seems like an odd move to me. They must be losing a fortune every month.

How could you be passionate about a magazine?

Read recipe. Cook recipe. Enjoy with family. Repeat for decades.

Among the home cooking magazines, Cooks Illustrated has always been better. It's a pretty crowded market though.

Wow that sucks! I hope they don't shutter the epicurious website or I'm going to have to start a printing spree. Effing McKinsey dweebs. Worked along-side them 10 years ago when they convinced a wallpaper (the real kind) manufacturer to focus on their high margin products and drop the rest. they became industry leaders in shiny flocked wallpaper....and subsequently closed.

Bon Apetit is better. In this environment, they did not need two cooking mags.

I would say the opposite, that Gourmet is better. To each his own I guess.

Saveur is better than both though.

let me rephrase, Bon Apetit is more accessible and has greater circulation.

I haven't had the chance to read Saveur or Bon Apetit, but thought Gourmet was a great magazine. It was beautifully shot , the recipes were fairly easy to advanced and the writing was engaging at times.. I'm defintely going to miss diving into that magazine on the subway right home as a reprieve from all the technical, mundane documents/email I read daily at work....

I'll agree with that. We mysteriously started getting Bon Appétit and it has better week day food, but it's still a cut above something like Good Housekeeping. Their photography and design is fresh--Gourmet had fallen into a rut like most Conde Nast magazines do.

Comparing either to Cook's Illustrated is a little apples/oranges.

I enjoyed Gourmet, made me really want to learn to cook some of the stuff I saw. I guess the magazine is "well done", if you catch my drift.

I really don't like recipes. 'Oh my God, Sheila made that goat cheese fondue and it was so spectacular!' 'Does she have the recipe?' 'Yeah, let me get her email from the evite and I'll have her forward it to you!' 'Perfect, we just got the new granite countertops and painted the accent wall in the dining room so we can have dinner parties! I think that fondue recipe will go great with my chicken kabob recipe!'

I will miss the food porn. Bon Appetit is just not the same.

Hysterical, but what are Sheila and the gals going to drink?
