Which Instant Messaging provider is the best?

I've got a friend who's bugging me to sign up for some IM service so we can chat live. Frankly, I think this is stupid, but who am I to complain. What IM service is the one to sign up for? I know that I can get an all-in-one software program to use but I need to actually sign up somewhere. Thanks.

Anyone else? Seems that AIM is the most popular.

AIM is pretty much no-frills but it works just fine.

The IM that most of your friends are using will be the most efficient tool. Except google chat. Google chat is a fucking piece of shit that has reliability worse than car made in India/China.

I prefer skype. It's free, clean, organized, and you can video chat for free

I would advise google talk, skype, or aim. And in that order. Definitely avoid facebook chat like the plague. :P

Dude, AIM is essentially for poor people and people under 21. Nearly all my working adult friends only use Gchat. What kind of people are you trying to contact, you pedophile?

I use GChat on occasion because it's right there in Gmail. Who the hell needs a dedicated chat app in this day and age? BB Messenger, smart phone, texts, Skype... there are a lot of other options.

There are several programs that combine all the options inside one app. I know Adium for Mac has everything under the kitchen sun (not sure about gchat though). I know there is a way to send a text via IM but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

http://www.digsby.com/ problem solved. no need to choose. just use all at once

Digsby is a bloated piece of assburger. Use pidgin if you need multiple IM types running at the same time. Hell even Trillian is better.
