What To Do With My Life/College?

I feel like I'm fucking up a lot lately, and need to get my shit together asap. Basically what I really want to do with my life is to go to school for fashion design. However, at the moment, I am going to school for Mechanical Engineering, and to be honest I hate it. I've never been a math or science person; I can do well in the classes, but I can not stand them.

The problem is art school is expensive, and I come from a family of engineers. I'm expected to do the same.

What do you all think about joining the military to pay for college? I just fear that with no education I could be thrown into a combatant position, etc. And I wonder whether they will pay for ANY major, or if it is only for specified ones.

I kinda just feel like I'm throwing talent away right now by doing engineering; I know that it is a very good field to go into, but I'm starting to realize that it isn't worth it for me at least.

Dude... do what you want, that's what college is all about. If you're miserable now, how will you feel when you're actually working in an engineering job?

Do what you love.

Why the hell are you doing mechanical engineering if you hate maths? If you don't like it, switch out and do something else. Your family's approval is not worth decades at a job you hate.

On that note, here's a Wikipedia page on the college benefits the armed service provide. It's not a bad route to go if you can't afford college otherwise, and its pretty easy to get a non-combat position.

Join the Air Force or the Navy to avoid being in combat. Not everyone in the military gets to go into combat. Make sure you pick a job that's as far from the field as possible.

I never heard anything about the GI Bill only being usable for certain majors. From what I know it can't be used at a few colleges. Anyways, when you're enlisted college classes should be free.

I think you accrue GI Bill benefits that are used after you get out (you could go to college at the same time, part-time). AFAIK, there are no strings attached re: majors. I have a client who used his GI Bill to get an education degree or something equally useless in today's economy.

Back to your original question - is it possible for you to do the engineering gig and take other classes to satisfy the creative side? I assume your school offers something in the art department or else you can hit up the local CC for something comparable.

Definitely do what you like, but don't forget your day job.

Any art / design majors on here?

I am going to do ROTC; however, I have to reapply to the design school. If everything works out I will have my tuition paid, a small monthly stipend, and housing paid for. So I will not even have to work a part time job. I'm applying for industrial design now; I know that I will have to serve 4 years out of college, but I feel that is fine, if anything it will be good for me.

Can you choose more design classes alongside mech eng? General principles of things like ergonomics / dynamics may be a useful background in fashion design... also looking at properties of different materials - there must be applications for engineering in fashion.

I thought he didn't have a "day job" (at least in the sense you mean) b/c he's in college?
