Why Facial Hair? - Page 4

I'm three weeks in to my first full beard. It's still itching, other beard growers of my acquaintance have said theirs did not itch after three weeks. I'm giving it another week or two.

Almost every time I see a guy with a beard, I ask the very question posed in the title thread. I rarely see a beard that makes a guy look better. Most men should not grow a beard.

Well, a hat probably retains heat for the head better than thick facial hair does. But yes, they are different areas and in a winter wind, one will want to cover the face with something.

Ben Bernanke?

I couldn't grow a beard if I wanted to. However, I used to wear a goattee just so calm down the Harry Potter comparisons.

I have a goatee and mo at the moment. consensus seems to be that i look better with it, which makes me worry what i looked like before. it's fairly trim though, so tidy for work.

your face itches because it's dry. you need to moisturize in the early days of growing facial hair until your face can catch up and start creating additional oils.

As someone with a beard I don't know if I really understand the 'no shaving' reasoning. While I don't fully shave, I still touch up the beard every other day to keep everything even.

Why I have facial hair
-Age appearance. I'm 24 and without the beard I can easily pass for a college freshman- with it generally people think I'm my actual age
-I like it and get alot of compliments on it. At first I grew it during summer class finals / running-relay weekend and classmates said they thought it looked good on me. Since then I get random people coming up to me telling me they like the beard.
-Looking different. It makes me stand out against the probably 80-90% of guys with short hair and no facial hair.

Thanks, that makes sense - I have quite dry skin in general. Your kind post has saved me some real discomfort! By the way I have 2 reasons for the beard (aside from often wondering what it would look like). I clippered my hair very short a few weeks ago and am thinning a bit so thought I'd see if it would compensate. More importantly, I have to attend a party next weekend where the theme is 'hairy'. I'm not sure it will stay, but with winter coming I'll give it a few weeks.

That's an excellent point. There are so few pictures of members with beards that maybe they are growing them longer and trimming at most every few days (maybe not right before work) instead of going through the hassle of shaving. One probably can guess a lot about a person by his type of facial hair.
