Are you referring to Statutes of Limitations? That length is different for each state by the way. First you need to default, then it needs to go to collections. Then you wait out the length of the statute of limitations. Then it takes another 7 years to get off your credit history. So depending on how long that limitation is, it could be any where between 12-20years.

Let's say she did this. Would there be any way she could find out if the debt is being pursued? If she were to stay out of the country for 12 years or so, how would she know if she were still on the hook somewhere?

You could call the collection agency (if you know which one it is) and ask... just block your number first.

I see this thread has stayed pretty active.FYI,she is no longer in the country,when I said she is moving,I meant she is thinking of a permanent move but she is not physically present in the country so I think consulting attorneys or filing for bankrupcy will be challenging.
As for the reasons,I won't go into details,but she had her own reasons and is not able to make payments because of her financial situation.
All I wanted to know is whether or not US court decisions would be effective in AU,I don't think they are but just wanted to get some info.
Whether or not she will try to work out some deal with CC companies is another issue.
And thanks for all the input.

All credit reports, histories within ECHELON countries are linked. If "your sister" moves from one ECHELON country to another, they will find "her". "She" won't be able to have access to any credits, most likely "she" will be denied cell, cable, internet & utility services. "Your sister" will have a better chance in a non-ECHELON country. Just be a man, arrange a payment scheme and pay up.

Common law countries generally have systems in place in statute and the common law for the recognition of judgments from similar jurisdictions. They'll probably just fax it to the AU legal department, get it rubber stamped, and attach her bank account. That's what I'd do; though I don't know what the procedures are in AU I'm confident they have them. I can tell you for certain that if she was moving to Canada, she'd be screwed.

people like your sister piss me off.

Imnot a religious man, but its completely unethical to party it up and run up $30k in debt just to high-tail it and seek an easy way out by not paying a dime. She did this and takes zero responsibility. I hope all people like this burn in hell.

While I (and it looks like most people here) completely agree it is unethical to accrue such high debt and 'escape' to another country, (hopefully prevented in that some judgments can be enforced across national boundaries and credit reporting is some what internationalized); the vitriol seems a little over the top.

correct. if i knew in advance that i would be moving to another country in a couple of years permanently, maybe i should open as many credit cards as i can and max them all out, put them all in my luggage or get them shipped to where i will be going and come out scott free?

i dont think it really works out like this. there's got to be some things in place to prevent fraudulent and malicious poeple like this from doing this sort of thing. or else people would be doing it left and right.
