4Runner it is. Now to the hard part of balancing of decent downpayment while not depleting savings to the end of keeping enough cash for down on a house. Trying to get in before the 8k tax credit for first time buyers disappears...

I'll probably get your guys opinions on the house in another thread.
Good choice.

I have hunted for a couple of years in a Ridgeline, the trunk in the truck bed is awesome. Its a gas guzzler when towing. Very reliable. AWD is pretty good. Have set 2 brush fires in south texas while hunting quail with the Ridgeline.....was NOT fun!! Its a very useful city truck.

Regards.

You're supposed to buy a house and THEN buy a car. You're not going to build a credit history in a month or two with a car loan, it may not even show up on your credit report with any payment history.

Let's say you can afford a $2000 mortgage payment without a car loan but you just got a $500 car payment. Now you can afford a $1500 mortgage payment (according to most banks).

You may be too late for the new homeowner credit unless it's a quick and easy sale (which is rare these days).

This realization is coming... that maybe a shot at the house will come first. But if I give myself a 500 dollar car payment (btw I know your #'s are as an example) I will shoot myself.

... I have been told that the gov is considering extending the tax credits..

Don't count on it. I suspect home prices will slump again when the credit runs out, $8K is nothing given the typical fluctuation in home prices.

You think so? In my area housing is actually on a gradual uptick... so I'm ancy... I'm just at a new job so I don't want to jump right in and hate the job.

My company manages a fund of single-family homes in the SW US. Granted, it's only one county, but our analysts think we've got quite a bit of time to do some more acquisitions. The bump in real estate business this summer was partly due to all the incentivisation the government did. Once that's done...

4Runner is a Tacoma (Hillux). Pretty much indestructible. And it's one of the few surviving SUVs that is not a unibody car-based vehicle.

Update: My current car required 4k worth of maintenance (2k immediately) so I moved on a truck and ended up with an 08 Tundra. I absolutely love it. Outdrove both the 4runner and ridgeline no question. And for it being a 5.7L V8 the gas mileage is good; better than the ridgeline, only slightly worse than the 4runner.

Just have to cross the fingers and hope the housing market stays depressed a tiny bit more... Going to try for FHA pretty soon and see what happens though...
