Music Suggestions from the Young Guys

Okay, so I keep fairly current on chill music, but then there's the music of my youth, alt/grunge, that I still like some days. I can't go listening to AIC and the like forever. So, knowing I like hard, dark alt/grunge stuff when in the mood, toss out some more modern stuff for me to check out.

No cookie monster vocals, can't do the death metal stuff.

I'm probably too old to give any decent advice, but I have to tell you that it saddens me that you feel you may one day abandon AIC. That just ain't right.

I won't abandon, just need to have more than what I did circa 1994.

Silversun Pickups do a modern take on MBV meets Smashing Pumpkins and Metric (from your part of the world) are a nice fusion of classic alt pop of the 80s & 90s.

They just put a new album out. I haven't picked it up yet; I'm hoping it's good.

Cool story: I saw Jerry Cantrell's last show before Layne's funeral. It was amazing. He talked briefly about Layne's death and played "Them Bones" and "Down in a Hole." He did them so well it was almost like I was watching AIC. "Down in a Hole" was one of the few times I've actually been moved at that type of show.

The only "young" music I listen to his non-popular country. My guess is you are not interested in this music. :roma:

Cool MrG.

I think I'm still feeling angsty this morning. *sigh*

I was fine with getting old until the last week or two. I think it was the liver enzyme thing.

I'll be interested to hear some of the replies you get to this thread. I could go for some new dark music too, but I've found the newer stuff is too melodramatic. Every time I try to get into some of the newer heavy/alt bands I'm really put off by it. I just can't see them pulling off a song like "Dirt." When Layne sung that you really felt like he might off himself, and it was really gripping because of it. When these newer bands do the same type of song it sounds more like they're acting sad to try to pull sympathetic tail than holding a pistol contemplating using it.

Maybe it's just my age. At 14 everything in rock music seems a lot more important, so that has always stuck with me. At 30 it just sounds whiney, and you want to tell them to man up.

But I am. I mostly listen to Country music but do like the popular stuff. Any good recs on the non mainstream stuff?

Try signing up for Last.FM, it's a free site that has custom "online radio stations" based on what you like.

For example, if I enter "Alkaline Trio" it will play a radio station full of Alkaline Trio songs and other bands that fit the same genres. it does a pretty good job at including older, establisted bands as well as newer, younger bands that aren't even on modest-sized labels.

Pio, try The Walkmen and Gliss (two separate bands). For the former, start with "The Rat." For the latter, maybe "Morning Light" or "Anybody Inside." I can hook you up if necessary.

I can't promise you'll like them, since your original post was pretty vague, but they make some quality music.
