It means the living room has gotten messy, and I need to "pick up" things before guests come over.

Honestly the only time I utter those words in real life is when ordering food for take-out from the restaurant across the street.

I know this term is used in a sexual context but I don't know how. I think I know what "hook up" means though.

"Hook up", to my knowledge, always implied some sort of sexual act. But a couple years ago, I dated a girl that was a senior in college. She said "hook up" only means kissing/making out, and if there is more, there are more phrases for that.

I think "picking up" has something to do with dressing like a freak and selling books and stuff about women.

^^^ Hooking up on the east coast means make out. Hooking up west coast and midwest (I think) means sex.

Down under, 'picking up' and 'hooking up' mean the same thing - kissing.

In the US, 'picking up' means kissing, while 'hooking up' has a different meaning. From what I understand, if you are sub-17, 'hooking up' means heavy petting and fondling. Post-17 it is assumed that 'hooking up' means that you rooted them.

I think "pciking up" has morphed into this "hooking up" for my generation. I cant say Ive ever said I picked up a chick. Maybe, if anything, it would just mean meeting them and maybe getting a number "dude, lets go pick up some hoes"

This is the correct response.

Back in the days of free sex and just middling weed, we'd say we "picked up" a chick at the bar which meant we'd banged her.

Oddly, when anyone said "hook up", it meant he'd meet us somewhere.

I guess if I say "I picked up a girl," it would mean I banged her after meeting her somewhere and taking her home. Anything less is not worthy of sharing. "Hooking up" means sex, more likely with someone you've had some sort of previous relationship with or at least knowledge of - co-worker, classmate, etc.
