A Nice Addition to My 'Puter

Plunked down $60 plus a few adapter cables on a dynamic range compressor/limiter for my PC. In very basic terms it levels the audio volumes when I'm watching Youtube, Hulu, porn, DVDs, etc. I can go from one video to the next without having to adjust the audio volume on my system. Everything plays at the same volume. Also avoids the blasting commercials before news videos. You can get them online from many different vendors. Two decent brands are Samson and Behringer. I bought one of these. Less expensive ($40) is the Behringer unit http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...ompressor.html

That's kinda cool. Adjusting volume is a pain in the ass.

Indeed. Especially late at night when you're watching a Youtube playlist.

I've always wondered about such a device. Looks complicated... is it? My computer setup is complicated enough without having to add another complex box.

Do you know if such a product exists for regular old television sets?

It's incredibly simple. They all come with presets which you can dial in to "set it and forget it". You place it between the speaker out connection on your sound card and you actual speaker cable plug. I'll diagram the setup if you want more details.

With a regular old TV, I've heard of similar products specifically for this purpose. If your TV has a headphone connector, you can hook up a box much in the same manner as I mentioned above. You'd have to listen to your TV with external speakers, however.

That's a great accessory. I wish every PMP (eg. iPod) came with a compressor and limiter built-in. There should be preset defaults for different situations: quiet room (off), noisy subway or plane (full-spectrum compression), car audio, etc. You would think that it would be a great feature on TVs too, and easy to sell to the mass market.

Why it isn't already included on most computer motherboards is beyond me.

How about a software solution?

Engadget or Gizmodo had an article where they visited Dolby's labs, and they are working on just such a thing for tv's. I do believe ipod's have this sort of thing where the volume is determined in itunes for each track and then all played at a consistent level; works fairly well for me.

I have volume on my keyboard. Works for me. Sqaushing everything with a compressor so that good quality stuff sounds just as bad as high quality stuff doesn't sound like a good solution to me.
