While it is too early to tell, this looks like the best Cornell team of the past decade. They're a big team too but they still have the skill to make the plays. Also, the freshmen look solid, Esposito has some hands on him. They'll lose goalie Scrivens after this season, but Andy Iles has committed (and he's the top US goalie prospect, playing for US under-18. Cornell's only loss this season in exhibition - against Iles)

And I'm noping for a split with ND.

Oh yeah, Scrivens is history after this season. I wasn't aware that Iles had committed to Cornell, but then again I don't usually follow commitments except UND's. As for the split, it's just too early to tell. UND, too, has a ton of talent -- they're actually quite a bit more accomplished so far than I thought they'd be -- but they're VERY young. We'll just have to see how it all plays out.

yeah, Iles is a verbal commit. He's from Ithaca so I imagine that may have played a role.

other commites for Cornell with applicable (though usually sketchy) rankings:

* Iles is ranked the top goalie in the Northeast and, by many accounts, in the U.S.
* Kevin Cole is the #2 forward in the Northeast.
* Armand de Swardt is the #4 forward in the Western U.S.
* Mathieu Brisson is #7 defender in Eastern Canada
* Jarred Seymour is #50 defender in Eastern Canada

Then in 2011 we have:
* John Knisley, #24 F in the Northeast
* Ben Thomson, #2 F in Eastern Canada

compared to his current freshmen class were Esposito was the only top-10 ranked player. I hope some leadership steps forward next season to help prime the young ones, this could lead to a very good Cornell team.

Also, note that these are as of last season, things certainly change.

Can you believe Bemidji is #7?? And North Dakota moved up by sweeping a team with no points??? (Not that I'm complaining, of course....)

almost as funny as Cornell at #3. They play Yale this weekend, huge test for the red. Yale had their number last year and took 2 of 3 convincingly. Yale has had a slow start, but they're a great team and they should be making some noise all season long.

Bemidji state, f them, knocked Cornell out of the tournament last year.

also, before I forget to mention, the Cornell/UND game can be seen online (as are all Lynah games). It's a couple of bucks but there is no way they're profiting from this. I'll get a link up, there is plenty of time in between. Video quality is poor, but this is keeping with Lynah tradition...

You mean the team, or the arena? Ingalls is one of the loudest places I've ever heard on the radio.

indeed. Of course, I'm not knocking Bemidji State. They're actually quite a respectable team and have a very, very good coach. I'm just not so sure they've demonstrated that they're as high as #7 yet.

I'm sure I'll watch it with a couple of buddies, crappy video or not. Our radio play-by-play guy (Tim Hennessy) is seriously one of the best in the business, though, so listening to the broadcast really isn't so bad.

The team, not the arena. They were slightly favored over Cornell to take the ECAC pre-season. Lynah, though, is very loud. It's not a big arena by any stretch of the imagination (4400 people), but hockey is the big thing on campus. I like the small atmosphere too, one person could shout an insulting cheer and the whole crowd will pick it up in a minute.

our radio guy is ok. Online is the video + the radio. Of course, it didn't help this past weekend when he got swine flu or something and called it with a terribly itchy voice. Caused my computer subwoofer to go nuts.

Holy shit, who was that??? That dude was lightning on ice! And what's with the fish?
Michael Kennedy, he graduated last year. I think he's in the AHL now, but his younger brother is a freshmen on the team this year.

And the fish? We like to throw fish at Harvard. It has been that way since the 70's.

crazy weekend eh, Teacher? Cornell lost to Yale, which I sort of expected. I don't know why, but Yale just has their number. Cornell had a terrible start and at one point were outshot 20-2! A disappointing effort, but they disposed of Brown 6-0 the night after. I see UND split the weekend as well, what happened?? First home loss in nearly a year (but I fondly remember the last )
Lack of intensity is what happened. They thought they didn't need to come out to play; then, when St Could scored, they got defensive. With the exception of the last five minutes or so -- which was pretty good -- most of their shots were from the point, if they got through at all. They played very well on Friday night, but I think they got full of themselves, just as they did against Anchorage. In the WCHA, nobody can take a night off. Let's hope they've learned their lesson early.

Cornell drops from 3 to 5. Fitting, I have no arguments there. MSU from 13 to 6 just like that. Meanwhile Michigan from 6 to 16 and Notre Dame from 8 to 14.

Wait...Bemidji splits with Minnesota -- pounding on them the second night -- and drops one, while UND split with St. Cloud and not only doesn't drop but actually picks up a first-place vote? The hockey poll gods must be smiling on us!

it's called the UND halo of excellence. Or the benefit of the doubt.

What an interesting weekend for Miami two shootout losses??
