Matching Patterned Ties with Gingham shirts

Would it look too fussy or should you I just stick to a solid tie (which I don't have so I'll probably not wear the shirt).

I have a dark navy (midnight blue) gingham shirt and was wondering if a black tie with white specks would match with it.

Man I need to get some solid grenadine ties.

I'd go with a solid tie. Grenadine or knit will at least add some textural interest without drawing the eye as much.

Or a near-pure solid: solid with a tiny blue pattern. I´ve got a similar medium blue H&K gingham. The salesman at Charvet approved of the (Barney´s) burnt orange tie with very subtle blue pattern I was wearing.

I like large paisleys as Alan pointed out or a tonal pattern that's larger in scale than the gingham. If you go solid try to go with one that has a nice visual texture to it like others have suggested (i.e. a knit or a grenadine).

Not that gingham and patterned ties cant be done (it certain can) I just dont see the black tie with the midnight navy shirt happening correctly.

Why not get a gingham tie, too? If you can match the colour & pattern, your tie will be almost invisible.

BTW, there's no seasonality for pink gingham, is there? I've always associated it with spring/summer.
