Banking for Idiots

Alright, so after talking to my bank there is indeed a pending transaction for an item I want initiated by the merchant. The merchant e-mails me and told me my card has been declined 3-4 times. The bank tells me that the money should go through by tomorrow. This store has a reputation for legendary customer service so I don't think they're trying to hustle me. I'm confused has anyone ever been in this kind of situation before?

Is this a credit card transaction? If so, the card issuer would normally put a note on your account to manually approve this specific transaction. In any case, when it comes to credit cards, there is not much the merchant can do to facilitate the approval. Unless they are getting a "Call for authorization" response when trying to charge your card and they just threat it as a "Declined" due to lazyness, incompetence, etc.

It's a debit.

Not sure what's going on then. The approval for Debit card transactions is usually only done electronically, there no call in option. You punch your pin into the machine which then displays approved or denied. Were you in the store swiping your card yourself 3 or 4 times? If you received denied you should question your bank why they denied the transaction. Make sure you were not trying to "cash out" when purchasing your item as you may have hit your daily cash withdrawal limit and caused the whole transaction to be denied.

If I don't live within the vicinity of a local bank, out of state, would I be able to hold membership with them?

About 6 months ago I had 3 cards declined at an automated parking garage several times each. I inserted the 1st card like 5X and deny, deny, deny... so I put in a 2nd card, denied. I inserted the 3rd card and denied. WTF!?! I had no idea what the hell was going on because I had plenty of money in the 1st (debit account) to cover the $30 and was nowhere near my limits on the CCs. This was right after a theater performance and I'm one of those people that gets out of dodge just as the applause is coming to a close (so I can beat all the other schmucks in line at the parking garage). So here's a lobby full of people waiting to leave, and my date!, watching me fumble through my wallet getting these cards declined. I feel myself starting to turn a little red in the face from both anger and humiliation when finally, the 1st card went through. I have learned to carry a bit of cash on me at all times. I still have no idea what happened there.
