+1. Tosted pine nuts make an excellent topping to almost any pesto, hummus, or babaganush as well.

For a basic pesto, I actually prefer sunflower seeds.

Generally, I like to add a few into the magimix but a sprinkle on top, especially w/pasta, is great.

Cook your own food - resist trendy restaurants (talk about ubiquitous!)

In a pinch, my fiance once used cashews. Not the greatest pesto, but it worked.

People from Genoa?

I think you can use hazelnuts or almonds as well. I really enjoy cooking with these ingredients.

I imagine it would be rather visually appealing.

Whenever my GF makes her caponata, I always try to sneak some extra pine nuts in there. Pine nuts and hummus are also delcious, if my friend from Lebanon is too lazy to make me some, I get the roasted pine nut variety of Sabra.

It makes 'da pesto.

Cippilini Pronto next to the Oscar de la Renta shop in Manhasset makes an amazing pine nut cookie.
