Does anyone know if Filson changed the source (or weave or something) of their mackinaw wool?
I bought my first Mac Cruiser a few years ago and have loved it to death, just bought a replacement yesterday and while I love it, it feels...different.
It feels softer more than anything and i know this is going to sound weird, but because of the softness it feels almost less substantial than my old Mac, which was so dense and thick it was like some kind of wonderful wool armor.

I probably sound like a crazy person for complaining about the wool feeling "softer", but any insight anyone may have why this jacket feels so different than my last one would be appreciated.

(fwiw, my last mac was charcoal, this one is forest)

Any ideas on how to get indigo stains (or at least lighten them up) on a tan duffel?

This is not a mirage. if you look carefully their current Mackinaw is listed as 24 oz across the board. If you have access to any of their old catalogs you will see that they are 26 oz From what I can tell, they have simply eliminated all 26 oz wool from their lineup. It makes it simpler. All felted/melton wool is now 24 oz at max.

I have a charcoal mackinaw from 2009 and it is definitely thicker, stiffer (and itchier) than any of the current Mackinaws I have seen (at Park and Bond and Barneys). I am guessing I have the last year of the 26 oz.

Keep in mind that Filson was purchased via leveraged buyout several years ago. All the changes you see in the last 5 years are intended to make it more profitable.

I've had various Filson pieces over the years and except for their wool, bags, hats, chaps and cases swore off them. Not due to lack of quality but shirt, pants and jackets shrinking when wet and drying just from the heat of the wood stove in the tent, sweating with any physical exertion because they don't breathe, too heavy with even dry finish, etc. After much debating I ordered an Oil Finish Cover Cloth Black Weekender Coat sight unseen which I received a couple of days ago. I'm impressed and think for town use it is perfect, and really looks sharp. Also got a Seattle wool liner which is a good match for it. Maybe the new direction Filson is headed will pay off, and I hope it does.

 

One of the reviewers on the Filson site did a very good job in his review of the black oil weekender, it starts off with: This coat is fantastic. Filson has broken into the New York City scene with this stylish and trendy coat. And I pretty much agree with that and the rest of his review.

 

 

 

Anyone have experience with CSP Forestry? They seem to have great deals on Filson duffle bags. Not sure if sale pricing is still valid.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light?!

I'm planning to go on a backpacking trip (~3-4 months?) in a couple years and after doing research on all sorts of bags, I want to make a Filson my companion.
1) I don't want to look like a backpacker
2) Those colourful traveller backpacks are really ugly and draw in the thieves and gypsies / trigger the vendors to inflate prices for me
3) I own a Filson and I know it can take a battering + look beautiful
4) I am a sucker for patina, lol

I'll be travelling light (few shirts, jeans, a couple shorts, a few pairs of underwear and some disposable underwear, waterproof shell) think 4-5 day trip with more essentials.
I want a bag I can carry-on (total <45 inches) so I can save time at airports.

I'll be wearing it as a backpack too:

Small duffle.
It sounds like a dumb idea but it's not as uncomfortable as it looks.
I WILL find a way to get custom backpack straps that will be attachable to the metal D-rings on the sides where the shoulder strap attaches to.

Narrowed it down to:

Small Duffle (39 inches)
Medium Duffle (52 inches)
Medium Travel Bag (42 inches)

I've read that the Medium Duffle can pass as a carry-on if not filled to capacity, anyone have first-hand experience?
Or any other recommendations? If only the duffle came in a size between the S and M!

I'm thinking that the small duffle will be too small, the medium duffle won't pass as a carry-on and the D-rings on the M travel bag are too low for me to install backpack straps onto. (see photo below)

vrts, the 39" small duffle will not be particularly small as a backpack. I just measured a random backpack in my office and it's 37" total; a classic Jansport is 38.2ish.
