I find this to be a reasonable use of an older Mac. I have nothing bad to say about this poast.

I've used Macintosh computers since 1984. Mostly I've liked them, at least well enough not to abandon the platform. I liked DOS and Windows 3. Hated Windows 95 and 98. Never learned NT well enough to form a strong opinion. Hardly any experience with any Windows later than NT4. It took me years (and several revisions) to warm to OSX. I've made peace with it, though the Finder (as of 10.4 and, from limited experience, 10.5) is still a bad joke. Every Apple mouse and keyboard since the late 90s "hockey puck" mouse sucks beyond belief. I think the "ease of use" of the Mac OS is often overstated. I knew the workings of OS 7 - 9 really well (for a non-programmer), so of course it was easy for me to use and troubleshoot; but there were a lot of arbitrary procedures that would hardly be obvious to the general public. I hate Final Cut Pro with a fiery passion.

You and me both. Luckily much better stuff has been coming out on other platforms since the utter failure that was Adobe Premiere was the only viable option. At least in the same price range. I thought for a while that I was going to have to break down and get an AVID turnkey rig.

The only upside to FCP is that it has pressured Avid to lower prices. Of course this is only good in the long haul if Avid can stay in business. I haven't used the latest Avid hardware but on paper it looks better than the Adrenaline -- which was, in my opinion, a big step backward from the Meridian systems.

Be grateful that I have (so far) confined my discourse on Avid products to those sold within the last ten years.

I havent't even looked at any of them in about 8 years.
Rollin with Vegas Pro 8 right now. Havent used it a bunch yet, working on getting a small/crappy HD flash cam at the moment. I'll start playing with it more then.

Dumped our Adrenalines for Nitrises (Nitrii?) a few months back and the difference is huge, at least in terms of speed.

Eight years ago I was using ABVB Avids on Power Mac 9600s. I liked those.


The Adrenalines really choke on HD. SD is bearable, but not as responsive as the Meridians (or, IIRC, version 5 on a Quadra 950). Also the G5 fans spinning up and down all the time are pretty distracting. I'd rather they just ran full steam all the time.

Eight years ago was when I came really close to throwing a G4 OSX9 machine running FCP across an editing lab in frustration.

This thread inspired me to get out my hp notebook but now it won't pick up any wireless networks for some reason. If I can't use the internet on it, it is pretty much useless to me. Anybody want to PM me some advice. The device driver is reading the wireless but when I do an IPCONFIG it says it is disconnected and customer service couldn't figure out how to reconnect it.
