I once spent 30 mins in an Anime convention, my friend wanted to see the freaks. Honestly there were a lot of cute girls (of Polanskiable age), I was surprised. The costumes made it mildly disturbing but I guess some would say the same about styleforum. I have a feeling Renaissance fairs are top of the foodchain though, like fat Guatemalan-hat juggler types and associated cockroaches.

Renaissance Faires are a step above State Fairs/local carnivals.

Do I look like I've ever been to a state fair/local carnival or even know what it might entail? Is this like a gay pride parade for straight, suburban people?

Yes.

Lots of greasy food emanating from trucks. Lots of recently paroled people maning rides which probably have not been inspected in years. And a lot of patrons taking time out of their usual Saturday night chinese buffet feast.

Hahahaha. I guess state fairs are pretty universally craptastic.

I assume the OP is a man who wants to meet women. In my experience, disproportionate numbers of women are found in:

Young professional art museum groups
Charitable/volunteer organizations and fundraisers, particularly those dealing with womens issues

In general, however, I recommend choosing activities based upon your interests, not upon the possibility of romantic prospects. If you find someone, great. If you don't, you will still have done something you enjoy, which makes you more well-rounded and interesting, which makes you more attractive.
