Bench Pressing PSA

Did you guys see this sad story about USC's Stafon Johnson?

http://www.nesn.com/2009/09/uscs-sta...t-surgery.html

For the love of god, lock your elbows out before/after racking the bar, and dont use a thumbless grip. No indication in the story of what exactly happened to this kid, but I guarantee 1 of those 2 things occurred.

Its a shame man, thats always one of my fears. When you throw up 225 and your shoulders start wobbling, its scary...

whats lock your elbows out? I started doing the thumbless grip cause I feel it targets my pecs more, but damn.

And tough guys in the various workout threads continue to laugh at those who, like me, think that machines are generally safer than free weights. "machines are for pu$$ies!!"

I think they're laughing at you because "machines are for pu$$ies!!", not because they're safer.

Nothing directed toward you or your choices in exercise, I'm just trying to make the distinction clear.

Thanks, that's clearer. You should explain that to the guy and his throat.

Thumbless grip freaks me out. I almost feel uncomfortable watching the scene in Unbreakable where Bruce Willis is benching. There are a few youtube vids showing what happens when the bar slips.

Sounds like this guy probably didn't lock his elbows and missed the pins.

That was crazy...i'm surprised he didn't have a spotter
post #8 of 54
Damn... with this exact fear in mind I've started only doing bench presses without a spotter with weight I know I can do 3x8 with... doing big stuff where I can only do three or four is a bit scary.

+1 on dumbbells. Is there any good reason to use a barbell?

I'm also glad this guy is alive. I heard about it during MNF.

The mechanics of dumbbells don't work with the human body past a certain weight. They're awkward for a lot of exercises as well -- bench press included.

Do you mean in getting dumbbells up or in the slight change in the position of the two hands relative to each other over the ROM?

Here's a video of Ronnie Coleman doing a dumbbell bench:
