Hey, Jonathan -
Holy Moses, that Indiana Jones carving rocks!!
I hail from where you went to college - Wheaton, IL! Been living here for a few years, but I'm sorry to say it pales in comparison to where I moved from; Colorado. If my situation would permit, I'd head back to CO in a heartbeat.
Anyway, let me express my appreciation for how you monitor this forum and make yourself available for Q&A! I think it's awesome. I've emailed the gals at cust service twice with some mundane questions, but I have some detailed queries that I think you might be better suited to answer... so I joined this forum seeking access to your SBL wisdom.
I've been all across the web looking at / researching / drooling over your Saddleback products for some time now, and I've decided that the Large Briefcase will be mine. (Also going to throw in a med wallet when I order). I sold the wife on the idea by saying that the briefcase and wallet will be my reward for losing 20lbs and making it 2 weeks without smoking. She agreed! BAM! Tomorrow's my quit date and I've lost 8lb since making that statement to my wife 2 weeks ago.
I'm starving myself and quitting smoking just to have one of your bags!
You should see me: I've downloaded a calorie counter on my phone, not going for seconds at dinner, snacking on veggies, and arming myself with prescription medications and nicotine gum. In general, I'm getting very psyched up! I've never been this motivated in my life to lose weight and quit smoking!!!
Back on topic, though...
Regarding the colors:
My initial favorite was the Chestnut, but I've developed 2 concerns:
- I wouldn't want it any darker than that, which I understand will happen with time and aging
- All the pics I can find of the Chestnut make it look like there's a bit of a sheen to that finish/color
Is the leather/finish exactly the same across all the colors? It looks like the Dark Tobacco Brown has a rougher, matte finish, which I greatly
prefer. But the pics of the Dark Tobacco Brown on the website don't look very "dark" at all!Attachment 38174
Even considering the 20% color variation as stated on the SBL website, I won't be happy with a color this light.
I've read your posts about how the lighter colors will darken and show more character with age. Aged character is something I desire, even if, especially if
, it takes years to get there. I totally understand and appreciate this, but again that light of a color does not appeal to me in the least. While I do have patience, and look forward to breaking in the bag, making it *my* bag, I simply won't be happy or satisfied with a bag that is that light in color for the first few years while I wait for it to age. It's beyond my color range of preference by a good degree. I feel like I would need to put some oil on it immediately. But I read on your website about how oiling it isn't necessary/recommended until after 1+ yr...
I envision what I seek is a well-worn Dark Tobacco bag, but I do not want to order a used bag because I anticipate enjoying some of the newer features (slim pocket on the back, keyring clip inside, false bottom, & two outside pockets) that aren't available on older bags.
Examples of what I want to eventually wind up with:Attachment 38167 Attachment 38168 Attachment 38169
Especially this bag. This is what I want!!Attachment 38170 I'll take the Robot, too, if it's on special.
Another major concern I have with the Tobacco color is that I've seen some pics where the light-colored bag just looks scuzzy. Uneven aging/coloring and dirt patches on frequently rubbed & touched areas... Looks very unattrative to me and certainly not what I want to end up with after spending $600.
What I don't
want is a shiny finish which seems common on the Chestnut. Seems like scratches don't look good at all on that finish. Does the sheen eventually wear off? Seems to me I've seen pics of some pretty weathered Chestnut bags that still looked shiny:Attachment 38171 Attachment 38172 Attachment 38173
So, I'm stuck!
- Is there a difference in the leather's texture between the colors?
- Would oiling the bag immediately upon receipt result in oil/color transfer to my clothes (not dry enough to fully absorb the oil)?
- Could you make an oil recommendation that might get a Dark Tobacco bag close to what I seek? (Or maybe a little lighter, to allow for aging.)
Sorry to hit you with such a long and detailed post. I'm sure you understand that this is a major purchase and I would really like to get what I want when I drop this kind of dough. Makes it even tougher that there's no showroom for me to get my hands on one (I'm one of those weirdos that you are rightfully cautious of, as you can probably tell from this frighteningly detailed post).
Thanks for your time!!
